    Job Title:Associate Director - Grant Development Support UnitDepartment:FAES | Research and Graduate Education Administration

    Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education, the Associate Director provides direction and coordination of research activities for the college by directing the daily operations of the CFAES Office of Research; The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences has a research portfolio of over $50M per year. Develops and implements strategic initiatives for research management and administration, to increase research capacity in support of the colleges mission, objectives and priorities as set by the Dean and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education.


    Provides leadership, motivation and supervises staff; coordinates workflow among Office staff; develops systems within the college for communicating funding opportunities and research accomplishments, including oversight of the Office website and publications; provides leadership during pre-award and assistance during post-award phases including assisting with the development of large interdisciplinary proposals; oversees research compliance monitoring for the college to assist researchers in achieving and maintaining compliance; provides subject matter expertise to CFAES faculty, staff, research administration personnel and department administrators. Serves as a resource for and collaboratively solves problems with units; answers administrative research-related questions for faculty and staff and assists with problem-solving. Serves as first point of contact for departments and center on research issues. interprets and ensures compliance with sponsor, university and third-party regulations; assesses trends and opportunities in sponsored programs administration; develops and recommends R&GE operational budgets; projects budget and staffing requirements.


    Leads the grants administration process by advising faculty, staff, and administration on various aspects of grants management, including finding new funding opportunities, budget development, PI Status request, IRB submission by administration, and other pre-award activities; Plans, develops and implements data collection management, policies, procedures; develops and prepares written critical reports and needs assessments; ensures compliance with college and university policy; continually monitors and reviews university, state, and federal guidelines, policies, procedures and regulations; participate in strategic planning activities of the college; fosters and perpetuates a research administration culture of customer service.


    Directs and manages college initiatives (i.e. Internal Grants Program (IGP), Equipment Grants, DC Days, Red Team Review process, STARS program, Research Compliance Programs, etc.); directs staff to complete required federal reports (NIFA Annual Report of Progress and other related reports); serves as a liaison between federal program officers and CFAES for education and communication efforts (DC Days).Serves as a liaison to the Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Research, Office of Responsible Research Practices, Technology Commercialization Office, and Institutional Review Boards. Develops and implements within the college a regular series of training programs related to research administration in part to stimulate interdisciplinary research and facilitate collaborative research efforts. Attends and presents at national professional meetings. Serves on college and university committees. Other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Required Qualifications

    Bachelor Degree in Business or Organizational Management focus or equivalent combination of education and experience and 7 years of relevant experience. Master's Level Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

    Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience:

    • Academic research programs and academically based proposal development
    • Developing and managing program budgets, delegating tasks to staff, and identifying and procuring other grant writing resources (e.g., grant writers, consultants)
    • Working knowledge of federal, state, and private industry sponsor regulations and guidelines pertaining to the contract and grant administration
    • Knowledge of pre- and post-award methods and procedures
    • Knowledge of how university and sponsor policies, rules, and regulations influence research program development
    • Customer service oriented with relationship building skills and the ability to facilitate and manage group dynamics
    • Excellent computer skills including; spreadsheet development, word processing, and presentation software; outstanding detail oriented organizational skills and well-developed analytical and problem solving skills.
    • Certified Research Administrator (CRA).


    Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience with writing grants and facilitating grant submission processes to science-based agencies including but not limited to: USDA, NSF, NIH, and private industry
    • Ability to work well under pressure while maintaining accuracy and providing high quality customer service
    • Ability to manage a complex portfolio in a multi-tasking environment and to work effectively as part of a team
    • Possess strengths in teamwork, excellent problem solving skills and experience managing multiple problems/programs within the context of tight deadlines.

    This person in this position works closely and is in daily contact with other members of the Grants Development Support Unit. Hybrid agreements may be approved based on the following: A person in this position is expected to be on the Columbus campus or the Wooster campus occasionally for meetings and other events for approximately 10 to 15 working days each year. The frequency, pattern, and choice of days for hybrid work may vary based on the policies of the organization and the roles and responsibilities of different employees.
