ABOUT NEIGHBORSHARE
1 in 3 Americans can't afford a $400 emergency.
NeighborShare's mission is to build access to just-in-time financial assistance so a small but pivotal expense, like a car repair or unexpected bill, doesn't lead to a crisis like job loss or homelessness.
We partner with local nonprofits to identify urgent needs that would otherwise go unmet and our growing network of neighbors, corporate partners, and private funders meet these needs in real-time via our tech-enabled platform.
Our model reimagines traditional philanthropy. It's fast, flexible, community-powered giving that prioritizes dignity, trust, and direct outcomes. It also draws on research that affirms the efficacy and efficiency of direct cash assistance. What began with a handful of partners has grown into a national network of 58 organizations across 19 states. To date, we've fulfilled $1.5 million+ in urgent needs for more than 15,000 neighbors.
To date, we have largely been powered by a dedicated team of volunteers who are experts in their fields—business strategists, engineers, product designers, marketers.
NeighborShare is rooted in trust, speed, and the belief that small acts of generosity, delivered at the right moment, can have a transformative impact.
ROLE OVERVIEW
As we enter our next chapter of growth, we're deepening our place-based strategy.
After years of building partnerships across the country, we're now piloting a hyper-local model in Greater Boston, applying what we've learned nationally to activate a powerful, community-driven ecosystem of generosity.
We're seeking a Philanthropy Lead to help build and grow this next phase.
This is a rare opportunity to stand on the front edge of a national movement advancing household financial resilience, while playing a visible leadership role in one of the country's most vibrant philanthropic markets.
Advance national fundraising efforts
Lead and grow our Boston-based philanthropic strategy
Cultivate a network of champions across individual, corporate, and institutional giving
Roughly 50-60% of the role will focus on Boston (likely more in the early months), building authentic, in-person relationships across the region's major donors, corporate partners, and philanthropic leaders.
We have a preference for candidates with a strong major gifts background, but will also consider those with significant experience in corporate giving, partnerships, or business development.
What matters most is your ability to build trust, open doors, and translate NeighborShare's work into compelling investment opportunities.
This is a full-time, remote role in that we don't have a bricks and mortar office, but Boston-based relationship development should be conducted in person whenever possible.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Strategy & Leadership
Partner with the Executive Director to co-create and execute a Boston-focused development strategy that complements our national fundraising efforts
Help shape and refine our place-based activation playbook
Identify where NeighborShare adds unique value within the Boston philanthropic ecosystem, as well as nationally
Relationship Building & Fundraising
Identify, research, and prioritize prospective major donors, corporate partners, and institutional funders
Build and manage a robust pipeline of supporters aligned with strengthening the social safety net and advancing financial resilience
Lead or co-lead donor meetings and pitches
Draft compelling, customized proposals and follow-up materials
Project manage an ambitious outreach cadence, ensuring follow-ups and stewardship are consistent and strategic
Stewardship & Engagement
Support planning and execution of local cultivation events
Help prepare impact summaries and donor reports that clearly communicate outcomes and ecosystem-level impact
Collaborate with volunteers and team members to optimize tracking and reporting systems
Serve as NeighborShare's on-the-ground Boston representative, occasionally liaising with nonprofit partners as needed
Other duties as assigned
WHO YOU ARE
Located in Greater Boston, with an existing ability/environment to work from home
Deeply motivated by social impact and strengthening the financial resilience of low-income households
A relationship-builder at heart — high emotional intelligence, strong listening skills, and comfortable in rooms with executives, community leaders, and grassroots partners alike
Experienced in Major Gifts, Corporate Giving, Partnerships, Sales, or Business Development (5-7 years preferred), with a preference for Major Gifts
There will be opportunities to finetune aspects of the title and job description based on previous experience
Familiar with the Greater Boston philanthropic, corporate, or civic landscape
Entrepreneurial and self-directed (truly — this role requires initiative)
Organized and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
A strong written and verbal communicator
Orientation toward solutions and problem-solving
A sense of fun and/or humor. We believe the work we do is important and it's a privilege to do it. We also believe in not taking ourselves too seriously
WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS
NeighborShare sits at a powerful intersection: direct cash support, local nonprofit partnerships, and community-powered generosity. We exist to make sure everyday financial setbacks don't become long-term crises.
Boston is our first place-based pilot market.
The Philanthropy Lead will help ensure we build it thoughtfully with the right champions, the right partners, and the right long-term sustainability strategy, while also supporting the larger national strategy.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
We take a thoughtful and deliberate approach to generating salary offers that take into account previous work experience, the role you're entering into, and overall market standards.
The hiring salary range for this role is $95,000 - $130,000 and will be commensurate with experience. In addition to a rewarding career within our mission-driven, values-driven, startup environment, NeighborShare is able to offer a benefits package that includes a healthcare stipend and access to a 401(k) program that offers up to a 4% match.
Additionally, we offer unlimited PTO, to be agreed upon in advance.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires regular local traveling and must be able to work evenings, weekends and/or irregular hours as necessary to interact with donors and prospects and attend relevant meetings and events.
This position also involves regular standard desk work; use of computer equipment and standing and sitting frequently.CONTACT INFORMATION
