    Job Summary


    Function in any medical situation where it is elected to support a patients cardiopulmonary system as operator of extracorporeal circulatory and/or cardiopulmonary support equipment.

    Assist physicians in the care of patients as relative to the profession of extracorporeal technology through consultation and/or operation of related equipment.

    Competent in the conduct of perfusion and the essential practices of extra corporeal circulation as listed by the American Society of Extracorporeal Technology.

    Responsibilities


    • Operate the heart-lung machine during cardiopulmonary bypass in a safe and concise manner.
    • Display competent and acceptable techniques and relative to the standards of the department.
    • Responsible for aseptic and swift assembly of the heart-lung machine, cell saver, extracorporeal assist devices, intra-aortic balloon pump, and other cardiopulmonary support equipment.
    • Monitor and maintain various parameters of the patients status during bypass and other procedures as needed. These parameters include, but are not limited to, anticoagulation, temperature, blood pressures, EKG, blood gases, acid-base balance, blood component concentrations, patient metabolism, renal function, pertinent line pressures, and other meaningful criteria.
    • Knowledge base relative to intra-aortic balloon pumping.
    • Set up required monitoring accessories and expertly operate the IABP inclusive of initial timing and troubleshooting of the device.
    • Serve in an advisory role to hospital personnel involved in the long term monitoring of the intra-aortic balloon pump patients. Supervise perfusion assistants in the performances of intra aortic balloon pumping.
    • Perform various modes of autotransfusion in different settings. Include, but are not limited to, hemoconcentration, surgical cell salvaging, postoperative wound drainage, and various sequestration procedures. Supervise perfusion assistants in the performance of autotransfusion.
    • Responsible for the accurate operation of several ancillary devices. Include, but are not limited to, vascular flow computers, various coagulopathy monitoring devices, various temperature modules, invasive blood gas computers, and stationary blood gas machines.
    • Preoperatively evaluate all patients and implement in a safe and concise manner any changes deemed necessary by attending physicians.
    • At no time will the Perfusionist place a patient at risk unless under direct order of the attending physician and only after reasonable attempt has been made to explain any possible direct and/or indirect complications stemming from the procedural change.
    • Perform safety checks on all equipment as required by the department.
    • Maintain an accurate record of all procedures conducted and report, as required, all chargeable items and services for purposes of patient billing.
    • Assist in the orientation and training of new perfusion personnel.
    • Perform work in accordance with all departmental pay practices and scheduling policies, including but not limited to, overtime, various shift work, on-call situations and work flow management.
    • Evaluated against CLIA-88 requirements and is qualified to perform all duties and responsibilities for this position.
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients.

    • Perfusionist (Required) Obtain certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (Certification) within two (2) years of employment commencement date and begin the certification process as soon as possible after employment.
