    Position Overview:

    Assures complete and accurate data are collected and maintained for all reportable malignancies, including reportable benign tumors. Review any applicable data from the patient's medical record, including imaging, pathology, treatment summaries, physician's office notes, in- and out-patient visits. Stay abreast of industry changes by regulatory organizations, learn from constructive feedback, work independently, and make decisions with limited information. Uses knowledge of cancer disease processes, tumor nomenclature, medical terminology, medical procedures, anatomy, and physiology.

    Additional Requirements:

    EDUCATION:

  • Associate's : Associate of Arts degree in a health-related field.
  • Completion of accredited Cancer Registrar training program.
  • CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:

  • ODS -Oncology Data Specialist.
  • TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

  • 1-year recent relevant experience.
  • JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

    Case Abstracting:

  • Identify, code and complete a patient's abstract in accordance with requirements by the State of California, Federal, American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation, and Sutter Health requirements.
  • Maintains minimum compliance and productivity standards as defined by the facility's cancer registry department and maintains an accuracy of 97% or higher.
  • Ensure cases are staged using the American Joint Committee on Cancer manual.
  • When available, provide any treatments received, follow-up information, including recurrence or metastasis, so cases can be transmitted to the state and national databases at least monthly.
  • Quality Control/ QA:

  • Case finding - Using all relevant resources, identify reportable cases by reviewing pathology reports and disease indices. Determine new or multiple primary cancers using ambiguous terminology rules and Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER)solid tumor rules (multiple primary/histology). Respond to case-to-case queries regarding missed cases (death clearance) requested by regional/state registry.
  • Follow-Up – Assist with Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation standard for patient follow-up using available resources including the electronic health record and daily obituaries.
  • Teamwork - Contributes to a positive and successful work environment, maintains an efficient workflow, and participates in team huddles and meetings, including offering suggestions and ideas for future topics.
  • SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Possess written and verbal communications skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical people.
  • Well-developed time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized operating procedures and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadline.
  • General knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook), CNExT cancer data collection, electronic health records (EHR), and EPIC.

  • Build collaborative relationships with peers and other healthcare providers to achieve departmental and corporate objectives.
  • Pay range (CA) : $ $41.56 / hr.

    Pay range (CO, FL, GA, NV, NC, OR, TX) : $ $37.79 / hr.

    Pay range (AZ, AR, ID, MS, MT, SC, TN, UT, LA) : $ $34.64 / hr.

    Pay Range is $33.25 to $41.56 / hour. CA Pay Range is $33.25 to $41.56 / hour. CO, FL, GA, IL, MI, NV, NC, OR, PA, TX Pay Range is $30.23 to $37.79 / hour. AZ, AR, ID, LA, MO, MT, SC, TN, UT Pay Range is $27.71 to $34.64 / hour.

    The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate's experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
