- Identifies needs for care at home, or alternatives such as outpatient treatment, extended care facility, etc., in conjunction with other disciplines.
- Sets realistic learning objectives by including patient and family in instruction planning.
- Provides self-care instructions.
- Identifies necessary medical information to be communicated.
- May initiate referrals as necessary to healthcare providers, other resource agencies, etc.
- Assesses personal and learning development needs.
- Plans and implements program to meet identified needs through formal and informal means.
- Evaluates effectiveness of formal and informal developmental programs, changes or modifies plans to meet personal learning needs.
- Supports philosophy, objectives and goals of nursing department.
- Performs within limits of State regulations, Code of Ethics for Nurses, hospital policies and procedures.
- MINIMUM EDUCATION: Current licensure by the Michigan State Board of Nursing (or eligible) as a Registered Nurse.
- MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of orientation and competency skills.
- CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families and hospital personnel. Expected to float or be pulled to any other area as needed.

GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Registered Psychiatric Staff Nurse provides the nursing care for an assigned group of patients utilizing the nursing process. He/she has the authority and accountability for decision-making and interventions relative to nursing care.
The Registered Staff Nurse is expected to follow Nursing and Hospital policies and apply Nursing Standards of Practice in rendering physical and supportive care (including health teaching and discharge planning to patients and their families).
He/she is expected to interact appropriately with staff, physicians, and other departments in a collegial relationship in order to assure patient and family needs are met.
He/she also directs ancillary personnel, assumes charge of unit when assigned.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Nursing Practice and Patient Care Activities:
A. Assesses physical, psychological and social dimensions of patients.
A. Assesses need for patient and family instruction.

D. Functions as Charge Nurse when assigned, providing leadership and direction to staff and assuring the provision of care to all patients on the unit.
E. Promotes good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
F. Participates in nursing committees and other activities which promote the growth and development of nursing and/or patient care.
SUPERVISION:
Reports to the Nurse Manager.
As a Charge Nurse, may supervise Staff Nurses, LPN's, Surgical Technicians, Nursing Assistants, Patient Care Technicians, Undergraduate Nurse Externs, Unit Secretaries and other nursing personnel.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:LICENSURE:
Registered Nurse License in the State of Michigan and BLS Certification.
