- Builds and manages an appropriate portfolio of donors capable of making large gifts of $10,000 or more.
- Develops and carries out effective strategies for qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift donors while completing a significant number of face-to-face visits, proposals, and other strategic contacts per year.
- Consistently conducts and/or manages the donor cultivation work and planning necessary to have a robust pipeline of gift prospects.
- Leads and runs capital campaign fundraising for the organization.
- Prepares written proposals, informational materials, endowment agreements, legacy gift illustrations and other materials needed to secure major gifts. Participates cooperatively in the organization's fundraising management system.
- Provides leadership, strategic direction, management, and coordination for all aspects of the organization's Development staff which include focused donor activities, such as direct mail appeals, to donors of all backgrounds, interests and giving capabilities.
- Designs and implements a Strategic Development Plan to grow staffing capacity as the receipt of donated resources increases. Creates a team-focused working environment that is rewarding to staff.
- Works with the Scientific, Administrative and Marketing staff as necessary to feature prospects in meaningful engagements that build stronger relationships with constituencies. Recommends prospects for volunteer positions, including advisory boards, regional engagement, and development opportunities at the local, state or national levels.
- Provides excellent briefing, follow-up, and other support materials that include prospect strategy, meeting objectives, and next steps to the company leaders and staff who meet with prospects.
- Attends community events and engagements in which prospects are present, and as requested by the Executive Director.
- Promotes company priorities and image to constituents and maintains current knowledge of institutional priorities. Proactively anticipates and responds to donor inquiries.
- Serve as a member of the leadership team by participating in group strategy discussions, providing project leadership when requested by management, sharing information with colleagues, and contributing to the achievement of the overall mission and strategic goals of the organization.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of professional development experience, with demonstrated fundraising success at the major gift level (five- and six-figures).
- Demonstrated success with a multi-million dollar capital campaign fundraiser.
- Demonstrated understanding of volunteer relations, the vital importance of and the breadth and complexity of academic medical or complex research institutions.
- Excellent communication and writing skills critical for communicating with a diverse audience, including internal leadership and external donors.
- Sound judgment and strategic decision-making skills with proven ability to think creatively and reach logical conclusions based on the information available.
- Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize activities to maximize productivity and efficiency, accomplish goals and meet deadlines.
- Experience in cultivating and managing less-experienced staff to grow in professional capabilities and accomplishments.
- Skilled in using current office technology, including remote connection software (Zoom, Skype).
- Valid driver's license.
- Knowledge of advancement strategies including best practices related to development at research institutions.
- Knowledge of Raisers Edge NXT.

SUMMARY: Our client, the Masonic Medical Research Institute - MMRI, an internationally recognized biomedical research institute is looking for a Director of Philanthropy. MMRI is looking for a leader who will increase their philanthropic revenue significantly by cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts while providing the leadership, strategic direction, and management needed to raise the philanthropic resources necessary to support and grow MMRI programs and initiatives. This individual will be responsible for increasing philanthropic revenue significantly over the next several years and diversifying the organization's funder base.
As a leader who serves the organization in multiple capacities, this position requires a sophisticated and comprehensive understanding of major gift fundraising principles and practices, as well current understanding of market research and business and fundraising trends that may impact needs and resources.
