    The Environmental Services Department is currently seeking to fill one (1) full-time Geographic Information System Specialist I/II vacancy in the Regional Wastewater Facility.


    Salary ranges for this classification are:

    Geographic Information Systems Specialist I:
    $74, $90,745.20

    Geographic Information Systems Specialist II:
    $90, $110,859.84
    The salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates' qualifications and experience.

    Under the direction of a Senior Geographic Systems Specialist, the incumbent will perform the key responsibilities listed below:


    Utilize Geographic Information System (GIS) and associated software to compile, organize, maintain, analyze, and display a large, diverse geographic database comprised of utility infrastructure and environmental geographic information.

    Create and maintain enterprise GIS datasets related to the environment, utilities, health, and safety. Enter graphic and attribute data into GIS while maintaining data integrity. Possess strong skills in GIS editing with solid understanding of data topology.
    Read/interpret diverse media types for attribute entry and new data creation.
    Analyze information, create maps, charts, and graphs to reveal patterns, trends, and hot spots.
    Perform spatial analysis that may include such activities as network modeling, routing, and model builder.
    Perform quality assurance of GIS data and associated graphic components.
    Respond to requests for GIS data, analysis, or reports as directed using appropriate GIS tools and following City protocol.
    Usage of GPS equipment in documentation and navigation for existing or new pertinences and utility infrastructure.
    Participate in Subsurface Utility Engineering and Utility Service Alert activities in the field, providing support to staff and contractors.
    Working with and providing direct support to staff, consultants, and contractors.
    Assist in testing and troubleshooting problems encountered in GIS work.
    Develop documentation and workflows for various GIS tasks.
    Install and maintain GIS software and hardware.
    Coordinate intern training and work assignments.
    Work under supervision of a senior team member.

    Education:


    A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Geographic Information Systems, Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Physical Science, Geography, Urban Planning or closely related field.

    II :
    One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in computer programming, geographic information systems or transportation planning.
    A GIS or GISP certificate from a certifying body acceptable to the City of San José is highly desirable.


    Acceptable Substitution:
    Geographic Information Systems Specialist


    II :

    Possession of a valid GIS or GISP certificate from a certifying body acceptable to the City of San José may be substituted for the one (1) year of experience in computer programming, geographic information systems or transportation planning.
