    Postdoctoral Scholar (Pool Ad, Toohey-Wray-Pressman Lab)

    The School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine and the School of Social Ecology Department of Psychological Science at the University of California, Irvine has one opening for a full-time post-doctoral research scholar.

    Postdoctoral Scholars contribute to the academic community by enhancing the research and education programs of the University. They bring expertise and creativity that enrich the research environment for all members of the University community.


    DESCRIPTION:
    The incumbent will work closely and collaboratively with Sarah Pressman, PhD (Psychological Sciences), Shannon Toohey, MD and Alisa Wray, MD (Emergency Medicine), as well as other medical faculty and research graduate/undergraduate students on two projects:

    # A DoD-funded project on how augmented reality technology can be utilized to produce better learning outcomes via more realistic emotional, stress, and physiological responses. This study uses ambulatory psychophysiological monitoring (e.g., skin conductance and salivary biomarkers of stress), self-reported emotional responses, and learning outcome data.
    # The second project focuses on how psychosocial factors interact with stress and immune change during the current pandemic. The incumbent will help with launching and coordinating a longitudinal project that will monitor psychological and physiological changes related to ever changing COVID-19 circumstances. There are other archival data available, as well as the opportunity to collect data on topics connected to either emotion, health and stress (the Pressman lab) or medical education (with Drs. Toohey, Wray).


    DUTIES:

    Primary responsibilities of the scholar will include IRB preparation, oversight of some aspects of the projects, data collection, data analysis, and co-authoring manuscripts with the investigators on this project.


    REQUIRED:
    Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, MD, or foreign equivalent) in Psychology, Health Psychology or closely related field.

    Demonstrated statistical expertise in longitudinal analyses, experience collecting and analyzing complex biological variables (e.g., skin conductance, endocrine function, immune activity), past record of high quality academic writing of peer-reviewed journal articles.


    DESIRED:
    Special interest in stress, emotion, and physiological function and the intersection between health and psychology.

    Strong quantitative skills for analyzing longitudinal and multilevel data, oral and especially written communication skills, and experience with psychophysiology, psychoneuroendocrinology, ecological momentary assessment, and/or ambulatory physiological assessments.

    Experience running online research studies, Qualtrics, project management.
    Applications will be accepted until position is filled. Position is dependent upon the availability of extramural funding and need. Initial appointments are for one year and renewal is based on availability of support. Salary is determined by qualifications and experience. All Postdoctoral Scholars are eligible for designated health-care and other benefit plans.
