Manufacturing Engineer / Engineering Project Technologist – Onsite contractor position

Katalyst Surgical, part of the ZEISS Group ), is an industry leader in the design, manufacturing, and quality control of ophthalmic and neurosurgical instruments, and is looking for an experienced, hands-on Manufacturing Engineer / Engineering Project Technologist within our R&D team to transition a neurosurgical device from development to volume production.

As a Manufacturing Engineer / Engineering Project Technologist, you will:

Develop the strategy for volume production of a surgical device currently in development
Define a production-oriented design based on manufacturability and defined production strategy
Test assembly processes and inspection concepts together with development in the development phase
Specify and implement workstations, manufacturing equipment, test equipment and production software in preparation for pre-production and production manufacturing
Design assembly and test instructions, and train employees on these processes
Prepare for production manufacturing through stabilization and validation of the manufacturing line
In series production, support the ramp-up process through stabilization and optimization of manufacturing processes, while additionally acting as the primary contact for the development and production teams
Provide accurate completion dates and remaining work estimates to project managers
Ensure the compliance of the internal design controls procedure
Work cross-functionally, collaborating with engineers, QA/RA specialists, product management, and external contributors for project execution
Communicate detailed progress updates within cross-functional meetings
Other duties may be assigned

Job Requirements

As a Manufacturing Engineer / Engineering Project Technologist, you bring to the table:

Bachelor's degree in engineering or a technical field of study,
Minimum 2 years of professional experience, preferably as a manufacturing engineer or engineering project technologist in the medical device field or another regulated industry (relevant internships/co-ops will be considered in place of industry experience)
Hands-on skills in problem solving
A high degree of communication, solution orientation and coordination skills
Knowledge of project management, preferably from the medical device field or another regulated industry
Experience with drafting/CAD software, preferably SolidWorks
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel
Experience providing detailed progress updates to management stakeholders

Coming from humble beginnings, Katalyst's history dates back to 1985, where founder Gregg Scheller created the Advanced Surgical Products brand with just 2 partners. The first ASP model was introduced later that year and was the invention of the first disposable light pipe for Retina surgical endoillumination. This first prototype was produced in 1985 on a kitchen table. A few years later, in 1990, the manufacturer produced over 180,000 lightpipes on an annual basis. This supplied the entirety of the industry, including the Storz, Alcon, and Grieshaber brands.

Today, when Retina Surgeons all over the world think of the Katalyst brand, they think of surgical innovation — and rightly so. Katalyst now produces many different models that deliver strong surgical performance and offer a variety of unique performance and ergonomic design features that distinguish the Katalyst brand.
