    Discord is a platform used by over 200 million people every month for various reasons, with the majority playing video games. Almost 90% of users engage in gaming activities, spending approximately 1.5 billion hours playing thousands of unique titles on Discord each month.

    The company focuses on enhancing user experiences before, during, and after gaming sessions.

    About the Role

    You will lead teams responsible for developing the core client experience, encompassing tooling, native code, and foundational React software across multiple platforms.

    This role reports to the VP of Core Technology and involves significant leadership influence on the Engineering organization's evolution.

    Your Key Responsibilities

    • Build and manage multiple teams, hiring, coaching, and instilling a sense of ownership and impact among team members.
    • Collaborate with peers to drive business impact through user engagement metrics, focusing on mobile performance and quality goals.
    • Work with top talent to set standards for React Native development.
    • Enhance public perception by communicating the work of your teams to Marketing and Comms.
    • Optimize processes using technical expertise to achieve exceptional results.
    • Contribute to organizational improvements alongside other Directors, upholding the workplace philosophy.

    Requirements

    • A minimum of 5 years as a Software Engineer, maintaining technical depth as a leader.
    • At least 5 years as an Engineering Manager, successfully managing groups of 3+ Engineering Managers and 15+ Software Engineers.
    • 2+ years of experience managing other Managers.
    • Pragmatic problem-solving skills using first principles thinking.
    • Deep understanding of mobile performance and React Native, with excitement for delivering a great product to 200 million users.
    • Passion for coaching and leading engineers, with a love for architecture design.
    • Industry trends awareness and enthusiasm for exploring new tools to solve technical problems.

    Bonus Points

    • Experience building new teams and departments from scratch.
    • A background owning critical performance metrics at a company level.
    • C++ and Native development experience, particularly on mobile.
    • Hiring experience for fast-growing startups.

    This full-time position offers a base salary range of $311,000 to $342,000 + equity + benefits, with individual pay determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
