Job Title: Middle School Family and Consumer Science Teacher (Grades 6, 7, 8) Department/Location: Grand Valley Middle SchoolJob Family: Certified Licensed FLSA Status: Full-Time, Exempt Work Calendar: TeacherPay Range: T Salary Schedule: $45, $84,112.00Reports To: Building PrincipalSupervises: Students Job ID#: 1497 POSITION SUMMARY: The Middle School Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing high-quality exploratory and elective instruction aligned to district curriculum, the Colorado Academic Standards (CAS), and Colorado CTE program frameworks and career readiness competencies appropriate for exploratory middle school coursework. This position provides instruction in courses such as STEM, Technology Fundamentals, Consumer Science I, Consumer Science II, Gifted and Talented enrichment, and other exploratory or elective offerings based on student population needs. The teacher designs engaging, hands-on learning experiences that promote skill discovery, creativity, and problem-solving while helping students build practical life skills, technology literacy, financial literacy, collaboration, and responsible decision-making. The FCS Teacher creates a safe, inclusive learning environment that supports student curiosity, independence, and preparation for future academic and career pathways.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: English Language Development Instruction & Student LearningPlan and deliver exploratory instruction aligned to district curriculum, the Colorado Academic Standards (CAS), and Colorado CTE program frameworks and career readiness competencies appropriate for middle school coursework.Teach courses such as STEM, Technology Fundamentals, Consumer Science I, Consumer Science II, Gifted and Talented enrichment, and other exploratory or elective offerings as assigned.Design hands-on, project-based learning experiences that promote skill discovery, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving.Integrate foundational life skills such as financial literacy, consumer awareness, goal setting, collaboration, digital literacy, and responsible decision-making into instruction.Provide opportunities for students to explore career interests and understand connections between classroom learning and real-world applications.Differentiate instruction to support diverse learners, including students with IEPs, 504 Plans, multilingual learners, and advanced learners.Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and performance-based assessments aligned to course objectives.Administer formative and summative assessments to monitor student learning and provide timely feedback.Use assessment data to adjust instruction and support continuous student growth.Implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504 Plans, and behavior support plans as required. Kitchen, Laboratory, Technology & Classroom ManagementEstablish and maintain safe procedures for hands-on learning environments, including food labs, design spaces, technology labs, and project-based workstations as applicable.Provide explicit instruction in safety procedures and enforce safety expectations during all lab and technology-based activities.Maintain and manage instructional equipment, materials, and supplies in accordance with district procedures.Model and reinforce responsible digital citizenship and appropriate technology use.Implement structured routines and clear expectations to support smooth transitions within a middle school exploratory schedule. Career Exploration & Skill DevelopmentIntroduce students to career pathways connected to Family and Consumer Sciences, STEM, and technology fields.Integrate employability skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, adaptability, and personal responsibility.Support gifted and talented students through enrichment activities that extend depth, complexity, and creative problem-solving.Encourage student reflection, goal setting, and ownership of learning.Provide opportunities for student collaboration, presentation, and demonstration of applied skills. Collaboration & CommunicationCollaborate with grade-level teams, special education staff, gifted and talented coordinators, instructional coaches, and administrators to support student learning.Participate actively in PLCs, team meetings, building meetings, and professional learning opportunities.Communicate effectively and professionally with parents/guardians regarding student progress, participation, and course expectations.Participate in student and family conferences and other meetings as required.
Classroom Environment, Safety & Student Well-BeingEstablish and maintain a respectful, inclusive classroom environment that supports student curiosity, collaboration, and positive behavior.Implement proactive classroom management strategies aligned with district expectations.Supervise students at all times to ensure safety during classroom activities, labs, transitions, and school-sponsored events.Reinforce responsible decision-making, teamwork, and personal accountability.Report suspected child abuse or neglect as required by law.. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of middle school instructional practices and adolescent development.Knowledge of Colorado Academic Standards (CAS) and Colorado CTE program frameworks appropriate for exploratory coursework.Knowledge of foundational STEM, consumer science, technology, and life skills concepts.Ability to design engaging, hands-on, project-based learning experiences.Ability to manage lab and technology-based classroom environments safely and effectively.Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse academic and social-emotional needs.Strong classroom management, organizational, and communication skills.Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a professional team.Ability to manage multiple course preparations within a middle school schedule.Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to frequent interruptions.Ability to recognize the importance of safety, follow safety procedures, and report unsafe conditions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with completion of an approved teacher licensure program.Valid Colorado Teaching License with appropriate endorsement, or ability to meet Colorado CTE authorization requirements for Family and Consumer Sciences as applicable to district programming.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Previous experience teaching STEM, technology, financial literacy, or consumer science courses. at the middle school level.Experience managing hands-on lab or technology classroom environments.Experience supporting gifted and talented learners through enrichment programming.Experience working with students with diverse learning needs, including IEP and 504 populations.Multilingual skills.
