    BioKids, a small childcare center at the University of Utah, seeks a new co-lead teacher.

    BioKids provides high-quality child care for faculty and students in the College of Science, as well as the greater University community.

    Its recently remodeled space includes three different classrooms, and it is run in a collaborative and family-focused manner.

    Responsibilities


    • Develop lesson plans to stimulate and develop mental progresses as well as provide a well-rounded day of activity for pre-school children. Use DAP guidance techniques, Creative Curriculum Developmental Objectives, provide appropriate activities.
    • Provide intentional daily experiences that are geared to the children's developmental needs and interests and are in accordance to the center's curriculum developmental objectives.
    • Communicate effectively with professionals, parents and children.
    • Monitors child behavior, and works to reduce inappropriate behavior and redirect children to appropriate actions using positive child guidance methods. The long-term goal is to help children learn to manage their own behavior in a positive manner. Models correct techniques for teaching assistants.
    • Teaches and leads children in music and movement to help them develop memory, verbal skills and a love for music.
    • Assists children with physical necessities, toileting/diapering, medical emergencies, etc. to give proper care and, where appropriate, facilitate development.
    • Interacts with parents and/or guardians to discuss concerns, day-to-day problems, suggestions, etc. to alleviate concerns and maintain a harmonious relationship.
    • Keep accurate records of client's program usage.
    • Maintains a healthy and safe environment for children by sanitizing materials daily, and operating within State Licensing Guidelines
    • Promotes leadership skills within a classroom team and oversees classroom assistants to interpret behaviors, and ensure they are working appropriately with children.
    • Demonstrate the ability to work independently, but show a willingness to take direction from the supervisor
    • Help maintain NAEYC standards and classroom portfolios.
    • Demonstrates consistent attendance and punctuality
    • Maintains a healthy environment for children by sanitizing materials daily and operating within state licensing guidelines.
    • Other Duties as assigned.

    Problem Solving:
    The Early Childhood Teacher will develop all lesson plans and curriculum, in consultation with the BioKids Director. The teacher will assess problem behaviors, and emotional functioning of children, and discuss these matters with the parents/guardians. He/she will also assess the degree of illness, or injury and decides the proper course of action, i.e. a child with asthma who might have an unusually strong attack, etc.

    The Early Childhood Teacher also has the authority to oversee Classroom Assistants and intervene to ensure they interact with appropriate child guidance techniques.

    Any suspicion of child abuse or neglect are reported to the Supervisor.


    • Must be at least 18 years old
    • Exhibits physical stamina necessary for daily interaction with very young children
    • Must be able to lift small children lbs.)
    • Must be able to carry small children in arms for short distances
    • Must meet physical characteristics (with or without the use of aids): including fine motor skills
    • Sufficient vision to read printed material
    • Sufficient hearing to hear normal and telephone conversation
    • Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation
    • Must be able to move about on hands and knees and sit on the floor with children
    • Must demonstrate effective communication with professionals, parents and children
    • Must demonstrate an ability to work independently but show a willingness to take direction from the supervisor
    • Must be warm, energetic and enjoy working with young children (6 weeks to 5 years)
    • Must pass a Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) background check
    • Must be willing to obtain a food handlers permit and first aid/CPR training
    • Demonstrated skills in multi-age programming for children and families
    • Demonstrated skills in staff orientation, training and evaluation
    • Demonstrated skills in Microsoft Office and management software
    Minimum Qualifications


    Bachelor's degree in child development, education, or a related field; two year's experience teaching or planning and directing a children's educational or service program, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); demonstrated human relations skills; and a commitment to provide excellent customer service required.

    Master's degree preferred.

    Preferences


    Prior experience in Early Childhood Education, and a demonstrated interest in learning about and providing the highest quality of care and meeting the emotional and physical needs of young children.

    Strong interpersonal skills and ability to carry out effective communication with families, co-workers, and supervisor are also required. NAEYC certified.
