    Pay

    This position is a salary position at pay grade 221.

    Attendance


    Non-rotating 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 4:00 pm; must be available to work additional hours as needed.

    Overview


    Under the general direction of the City Attorney, the Attorney III provides legal counsel to the City, consults with, and advises professional staff, represents assigned departments, and as assigned: Provides legal counsel, litigation support and supervision for assigned City matters.

    Responsibilities


    • Analyze legal issues and determine the law by reviewing statutes, regulations, cases, law reviews, and other legal research using books and publications, the internet, electronic legal services, and consulting with others
    • Prepare, review, and edit documents, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, leases, easements, pleadings, motions, and briefs
    • Represent the City by advising and consulting with clients and attorneys in a wide range of legal matters including litigation, arbitration, and mediation
    • Negotiate the terms of contracts, agreements, and documents with opposing counsel and third parties; and identify available practical approaches to conflict and problem resolution
    • Provide legal advice and counsel to departments, City officers, committees, and boards on a variety of issues based on the applicable facts, documents and state and federal law: Develop alternative solutions to problems by evaluating available courses of action, counsel, advise and guide individuals
    • Investigate events and issues by ascertaining the required information, obtaining relevant documents and physical evidence, identifying, and interviewing potential witnesses
    • Arranging for the appropriate examination or testing of physical evidence
    • Participate in all assigned duties, prepare evaluations, attend City functions, and keep records
    • Maintain professional knowledge and required skills by self-study
    • Maintain required license and compliance with the Code of Disciplinary Rules and Professional Conduct
    • Travel within the City, State, and otherwise as required to perform the duties of the position
    • For those attorney Ills assigned as litigators: Litigate effectively without supervision and substantially satisfy the above requirements
    • May be asked to perform other duties as assigned
    Qualifications


    • Requires a Doctor of Jurisprudence
    • Minimum of five (5) years of experience
    • A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

    Basis of Rating

    Application review and the City may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
