    Description

    The Turkey Education Unit (Prestage Department of Poultry Science) conducts intensive research involving genomics, physiology, nutrition, animal feed quality, human food quality, welfare, and environmental aspects of turkeys.

    The research is both applied and basic in nature with a great deal of detail in data collection required on a daily basis.

    The Unit also serves as a training ground for undergraduate and graduate students on a daily basis.

    The facility is complex mechanically, which requires daily maintenance of such items as fans, motors, ventilation systems, floor systems, feeders, drinkers, plumbing, etc.

    Essential Job Duties


    Research Technicians serve as an integral part of the teams of several faculty principle investigators during the conduct of experiments and also as support staff under the supervision of the Research Operations Manager with responsibility for operations and maintenance of the facility and animals.


    Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Assist in the training of undergraduate and graduate students.
    • Daily care of turkeys is required.
    • Perform animal euthanasia and slaughter when necessary.
    • Animal care and oversight consistent with university and federal approved institutional animal care standards.
    • Position is required to drive farm and state vehicles.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Experience/Education

    Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

    Other Required Qualifications


    • Demonstrated abilities and commitment to proper animal welfare and care in a research setting
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) or similar software
    Preferred Qualifications


    • High school diploma or GED
    • Animal experience preferred
    • Delivering bulk animal feed using a bulk truck/trailer
    Required License or Certification


    • A valid North Carolina driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start is required and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
    • A valid CDL license
