Nuclear Materials Research & Development Engineer- Intern at Jacobs Space Exploration Group

This job opportunity is for a Nuclear Materials R&D Engineer Intern position at Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) in support of NASA EM32 Advanced Metals Processing & Technologies Team. The role focuses on nuclear fuel design for NASA's Space Nuclear Propulsion (SNP) Program, emphasizing research, design, and testing of materials at high temperatures and in hot hydrogen environments.

Job Responsibilities:

Collaborate with researchers to create fuel development plans and conduct research activities with partners from the DOE, private sector, and academia.
Synthesize materials for space nuclear propulsion, including nuclear fuels, refractory metals, and ceramics.
Adhere to Nuclear Regulatory Commission safety protocols in radiological labs.
Present research findings to peers, managers, and collaborators.
Communicate effectively with non-technical audiences.
Prepare research plans and technical reports.

Qualifications:

B.S. Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering or related field (ABET accredited university preferred).

Minimum Requirements:

Currently pursuing a B.S. degree in materials science, ceramics, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, nuclear engineering, or related field.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word).
Strong written and oral communication skills.

Desired Skills and Experience:

Enrollment or completion of M.S. or Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, materials science, ceramics, or related field.
Experience with high-temperature furnaces and materials.
Handling radiological materials and previous internship experience at NASA or DOE Laboratories.
Metallographic sample preparation and materials characterization.
Design of experiments and technical report writing.

Physical Demands:

Work involves sitting in meetings and at a desk for extended periods. Some stairs/elevator use required.

Skills and Attributes:

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Professional interaction with colleagues, management, and clients.
Occasional domestic travel may be required.
Independent work with minimal supervision and good judgment.
Operating general office equipment.
