The Waste Management Division of Public Works is seeking dependable and self-motivated individuals to deliver essential quality services to the citizens of Chesapeake. The candidate selected for this position will pick up refuse cans from houses and/or business establishments and will dump the refuse into truck; will clear the refuse areas of loose debris and return cans, will operate packer equipment as needed to make room for additional refuse in the truck.

Duties include:

directing traffic around the refuse truck and assisting the driver to avoid accidents.

cleaning refuse truck and equipment.

ensuring safety of refuse collection including wearing protective equipment, inspecting cans before handling, and watching for falling objects from the truck.

and performing related tasks as necessary such as monitoring collection areas for children and adults.

Required Qualifications VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires a minimum of one month of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: May require a Forklift Certification within six (6) months of employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Preferred Qualifications
