    DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
    The work involves providing direct care to patients in need of

    emergency care at the Erie County Medical Center (ECMCC). The incumbent provides routine care to emergency room patients and performs other duties as assigned. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a professional or para-professional nursing or medical employee. Does related work as required.


    TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
    Performs venipuncture;

    Performs pulse oximetry and records measurements;

    Monitors fluid intake and output;

    Performs specimen collections;

    Performs point of care testing;

    Ensures quality controls are completed;

    Complies with infection control policies & procedures and personal protection equipment;

    Obtains and records vital signs and notifies supervisor of changes;

    Utilizes pain scale and appropriate intervention when providing patient care;

    Responds appropriately to life-threatening emergencies;

    Provides personal hygiene care including showers, bed baths, shaving, nail, hair and oral care;

    Provides nutritional needs including passing and collecting trays and nourishments, setting up trays and adaptive feeding equipment, feeds or assists as necessary;

    Cares for patient's personal need items sure as eyeglasses, hearing aids, canes, wheelchairs and other adaptive devices;

    Completes property inventory and secures patient property according to hospital policy;

    Transports and transfers patients utilizing wheelchairs, stretchers, beds or medical lifts;

    Assists in transporting patients from helipad;

    Assists with patient's ambulation;

    Performs range of motion exercises

    Performs 12 Lead ECG;

    Greets patients and assists with processing of patients;

    Obtains medical records;

    Gives enemas;

    Measures and adjusts crutches, instructs patients on use of crutches;

    Identifies changes in patient's condition and notifies supervisor;

    Monitors stock supplies and notifies appropriate staff for ordering replacements;

    Maintains ambulance equipment;

    Applies TED stockings, ace wraps, non-complicated splints; abdominal binder arthrombic pumps / leggings, splints/prosthetic devices;

    Performs post-mortem care;

    Performs simple treatment and simple dressing changes;

    Dresses and undresses patients and perform Infection Control Procedures;

    Performs non-complicated eye washing;

    Assists in discharging patients from Emergency Room.

    FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:


    Good knowledge of first aid techniques including cardiopulmonary resuscitations; working knowledge of standard of care techniques; ability to perform a variety of tasks; ability to locate, operate and maintain various hospital equipment; ability to operate MERS radio; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year experience as an Emergency Medical Technician, nursing assistant or hospital aide; or:
    • Possession of thirty (30) semester credit hours from a school of professional nursing; or:
    • Completion of a course of study in a school of practical nursing approved by the New York State Education Department; or:
    • Completion of a certificate program as a medical assistant, medical office assistant or closely related program from a college, university or post-high school institution.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:


    Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from an ECMCC approved provider within sixty (60) days of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.

    Your credit hours or certificate must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S.

    Department of Education/ U.S. Secretary of Education.
