The position also supports the department in managing callout maintenance and snow removal operations.Examples of Duties Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesThese examples of responsibilities are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work performed and are not meant to be inclusive.
The position description is subject to change as the needs of the employer and requirements of the job change. Perform preventative and emergency maintenance and repairs to heavy equipment, light duty equipment, departmental vehicles, construction equipment, and generators.Maintain adequate shop supplies and parts, maintains accurate records of all work performed and supplies used, and make recommendations for necessary purchases of equipment and supplies.
Perform D.O.T. and other safety inspections.Perform welding and fabricating to repair and maintain all equipment.
Perform small repairs, troubleshoot, and maintain the Public Works mechanic shop.
Respond to emergency callouts.
Operate snow removal equipment.
Operate other heavy/light equipment as assigned.
Perform additional duties and responsibilities as necessary or as assigned. Typical Qualifications Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent.
Three years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic OR four years combination of verifiable, formal training and experience. Current automotive mechanics may be considered with prior heavy equipment mechanic experience.
Valid Class B Commercial Driver's license, with Tanker endorsement (or ability to obtain endorsement within 6 months of hire).Good verbal and written English communication skills.
Previous experience and skill in the safe operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment.Experience with welding and fabrication.
Preferred QualificationsValid Class A Commercial Driver's License (or obtain within one year of hire).Five years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic.
Knowledge of the practices, procedures, equipment, and materials used in Public Works maintenance and construction work.Two-year degree/certificate in heavy equipment mechanic or automotive mechanic program. Current Vehicle DOT inspection certificate. A.S.E Certified for automobiles and light duty trucks.
Supplemental Information Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of the practices and methods, tools, and materials used in the maintenance of heavy, construction and related equipment.
Knowledge of the mechanics and operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines; safe equipment operation and repair; and large-scale shop operations.
Ability to diagnose defects in heavy, construction, and related equipment, and to repair such defects with skilled proficiency. Ability to work with autonomy in managing the shop and fleet.Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in this field. Ability to perform manual labor associated with major mechanical repair work.
