    POSITION: Natural Resource Technician I/II (Seasonal)

    SALARY: $20.00-$24.94, per hour DOE

    REPORTS TO: Research Scientist

    LOCATION: Fish and Wildlife; Spokane, Washington

    Basic Functions: Performs work to support the Colville Tribes' White Sturgeon and Burbot projects which includes field work, assisting with maintenance of project trucks, boats, boat trailers, as well as construction and maintenance of sampling equipment. Most field work will be conducted from boats and will occur both during the day and at night and travel for periods of up to 10 consecutive days during field work.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and Training:

    For Natural Resource Technician I:

  • Requires a HS Diploma or GED and satisfactory work history.
  • Towing and backing boat experience, preferred.
  • Requires a valid driver's license and be eligible for the Tribes' vehicle insurance and maintain throughout employment. Driving record must qualify for a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operators Identification card.
  • For Natural Resource Technician II:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED and 36 months progressively responsible experience equivalent to the Technician I or equivalent level, related to wildlife, natural resource management or other closely related field, OR an Associate's Degree in the applicable science and 6 months of experience (must submit transcripts for credit).
  • Towing and backing boat experience, preferred.
  • Requires a valid driver's license and be eligible for the Tribes' vehicle insurance and maintain throughout employment. Driving record must qualify for a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operators Identification card.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires knowledge of standard fishery techniques.
  • Requires basic knowledge of Lake Roosevelt fish species and ability to correctly identify preferred.
  • Requires basic knowledge of biological data collection.
  • Requires accurate identification of freshwater fish species of the Columbia River basin.
  • Requires basic sampling gear and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Requires working knowledge of computers for word-processing, spreadsheet, and database software for data entry and web browser for researching sampling equipment.
  • Requires the skill of attention to detail.
  • Requires experience using hand and power tools, and proper care and maintenance of tools.
  • Requires sufficient knowledge of proper English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation to prepare professional correspondence.
  • Requires sufficient human relations skill to work productively and cooperatively with diverse teams, exercise patience when dealing with internal and external customers, and convey technical concepts.
  • Requires the ability to apply standard fisheries related laboratory and field methods to gather data.
  • Requires the ability to accurately identify freshwater fish species of the Columbia River basin.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, crew and the general public.
  • Requires the ability to organize and prioritize work to achieve results, goals and objectives on time.
  • Requires the ability to operate equipment, including hand and power tools and sampling gear, safely and effectively.
  • Requires the ability to maintain equipment. Requires the ability to effectively troubleshoot problems with equipment.
  • Requires the ability to understand and follow applicable regulations and standards to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Requires the ability to remind others of safety practices to minimize the likelihood of accidents.
  • Requires the ability to effective handle adverse situations, making appropriate decisions, working calmly and accurately.
  • Requires the ability to use field equipment.
  • Requires the ability to perform a variety of outdoor work related tasks in inclement weather and in rough terrain.
  • Requires the ability to write and speak clearly and effectively. Requires the ability to collect, compile, and record scientific data. and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Requires the ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment as a team member in a pleasant and efficient manner.
  • Requires the ability to work effectively within a team environment.

  • The position incumbent must be able to function indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Requires the ability to use near vision to read printed materials.
  • Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone.
  • Requires manual and finger dexterity to write, use a pointing device and keyboard at an acceptable rate that meets department deadlines and accuracy standards, operate microcomputer, and use other standardized office equipment, almost always requiring repetitive motions.
  • Requires the ability to sit or stand for considerable periods of time (hours).
  • Requires the ability to travel distances on rough terrain while packing 50 lbs.
  • Requires the ability to work a variable schedule, including: evenings, early mornings, holidays, and weekends as the work dictates.
  • Requires overnight travel at times.
  • Requires the ability to travel for meetings, training and conference participation as necessary.
  • Requires the ability and willingness to accommodate a flexible schedule with changes on short-notice.
  • Requires the ability to manage sampling gear, which can require repetitive lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires travel away from duty station to conduct field work for periods up to 10 consecutive days at a time.
  • Requires the ability and willingness to work indoors in an office or laboratory setting.
  • Requires ability to work and drive in adverse weather conditions and work in rough terrain.
  • Requires excellent physical condition and will be expected to pull, push, or lift heavy objects performing tasks on variable and slippery terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Requires the ability to work in inclement weather conditions on a boat at night and during the day.
  • Requires the ability swim.
  • Requires the ability to camp at the study site during the field season (May – August).
  • Requires the ability to swim and work comfortably on boats, docks, and catwalks around swift moving cold water.
