    This position is for a Principal Software Engineer on the Mission Systems Manufacturing team in Cedar Rapids, IA. The person hired will focus on the full lifecycle of applications including requirements capture, development, software architecture, integration, testing, and configuration management. This will include integration and test of new features within existing software applications. The overarching roles and responsibilities of this site team are to promote and implement changes in a manufacturing operations environment to achieve site goals around improving quality, reducing costs, improving the flow of product, and making our factory smarter through Industry 4.0 type initiatives. This position will provide the opportunity for independent action AND working in a team environment of manufacturing engineers, production personnel, management, and other support organizations.

  • Primary Responsibilities:

    The primary responsibilities for this position will be site level projects in a manufacturing environment where the development of software applications is necessary for automation and compliance. This job will focus primarily on these areas:

  • Design and develop software applications requiring state of the art industry knowledge and techniques
  • Understand and apply Collins Aerospace software processes to all software development efforts
  • Establish departmental standards around requirements capture, analysis, design, development, code reviews, test and release software processes, tools, methods, and coding best practices in a manufacturing environment and where not already defined by Collins' processes
  • Lead and participate in full lifecycle development of applications including requirements capture and development, software architecture, integration and testing, and documentation of software of moderate complexity
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional team efforts in definition, integration, verification, and validation of products and sub-systems of high complexity
  • Identify root cause of the most advanced and complex software and systems issues using appropriate debug and analysis tools
  • Produce engineering estimates and rough order of magnitude (ROM) for individual and group tasks
  • Integrate and test changes to existing software applications with a focus on high quality, reliable solutions
  • Work directly with leaders in other departments to escalate and resolve technical software issues in a timely fashion
  • Mentor junior software engineers and provides guidance on complex projects
  • Stay current on best practices and advancements in development methodologies and software technology
  • Provide project status along with any necessary supporting documentation

  • Develop plans aligned with corporate policies and budgets
  • Highly complex problem solving with little to no oversight required
  • Mentor junior software engineers and provides guidance on complex projects
  • Qualifications/Experience Needed:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced experience with windows and web based application development
  • Advanced experience with C#, VB.NET, ASP.NET, Java, SQL, and Python
  • Experience in large database design and query tuning
  • Experienced mentoring or acting as software lead
  • Manufacturing and/or chemical process domain knowledge and experience
  • Data analysis and visualization
  • Developing factory automation analysis tools and solutions
  • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
