Job Summary
Albemarle Corporation is seeking a Project Engineering Manager for the Advanced Energy Storage Materials (AESM) development projects.
This role is a senior appointment to provide technical engineering design support for capital projects to ensure safety, operational and technical integrity in all process aspects of the chemical process used to make lithium products from the FEL and detailed engineering phases through to plant construction and commissioning.
Candidate must be highly motivated to lead engineering, manage activities and tasks across multiple global projects from concept through start-up with a cross functional team.
The role would report to the Engineering Manager and will be based in Charlotte, NC but will be expected to support projects across multiple global sites.
ResponsibilitiesIndependently evaluates, selects, and applies broad scientific techniques and engineering principles, to envision, develop, and execute process designs and to recommend solutions to complex problems.
This position must have strong fundamental chemical engineering and process design experience.Collaborates with the R&D and Process Technology teams on the conceptual and front-end engineering design efforts, partnering with engineering service providers where needed.
Execute process design activities, which include generating heat and material balances, generation of PFDs and P&IDs, redlining existing PFDs and P&IDs to accomplish project scope, support equipment specifications and design, optimize plant layout for safety and efficiency, and other scopes of works as required to support capital projects.
Supervise and influence the process design activities conducted by the engineering contractor.Review/develop process design standards and specifications and enhance the existing standards to improve efficiency and quality.
Technical involvement with sizing and selection of chemical processing equipment (pumps, pressure vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, etc.) used in the chemical processing industry.
Support the project(s) as Engineering Lead during all phases of a capital project - scope development, detailed design, construction, and commissioning.
Research, interpret, and ensure compliance with regulatory and design codes and standards.Maintains awareness of changing requirements and considers them in engineering designs.
Review technical feasibility of proposed solutions to engineering problems.
Participates in HAZID, HAZOP and risk reviews.
Ensures that process hazard analysis open/action items are adequately addressed in engineering deliverables prior to execution.
Cooperation and coordinating the activities with other engineering disciplines (civil, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation) to provide solutions to project risks and concerns as they arise.
Identify opportunity for improvement and develop solutions that improve the safety, efficiency, quality, operability, maintainability and speed of the process design.
Maintains effective communication throughout the project life cycle.Display and champion the Albemarle Core Values on the project team.
Consult extensively with internal and external project team members, with a high degree of reliance placed on scientific interpretation and advice.
Effectively advise the business on applicable technology and innovation in the field of process designMust be able to travel up to 25% of the time to engineering contractor offices and visit suppliers as needed to support project activities.
Essential QualificationsMinimum of 15 years of engineering experience in Refining, Chemicals, Pharma/Biotech, Mining/Minerals/Metals or similar industrial manufacturing environment with progressive demonstration of experience on capital projects.
It is preferred that the experience is a mix of time in office as well as time in a plant, R&D, or other manufacturing environment.
Minimum of 5 or more years of experience working on scale-up and commercialization of new technologies and processes from lab à pilot à commercial scale.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Ability to communicate with senior level leadership within an organization.
Must pay close attention to details, follow high standards for accuracy and completeness, and accept constructive criticism from coworkers.
Effective at working with other staff members and plant personnel in a fast-paced environment.
Works effectively within a project stage-gate system environment including essential success factors for early phase and execution projects.
Demonstrated knowledge of the ability to read, understand, and modify or develop project technical documentation.
Extensive in-depth knowledge of P&ID's, mechanical, civil/structural/architectural, electrical, instrumentation and controls designs and drawings
Familiarity with solids handling equipment and packaging.
Experience with Metal Electrolysis would be a plus.
Ability to manage multiple priorities concurrently and adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment.
Must be comfortable working in early project phases with a high level of ambiguity and frequent changes.
Familiar with equipment (kilns, scrubbers, centrifuges, filter presses, pumps, pressure vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, mixers, conveyors, dryers, etc.) used in the chemical processing industry.
Familiarity with project methodologies to scale-up new technologies from lab to pilot plant to commercial productionAbility to supervise internal and external multi-disciplined teams.
Knowledge of project controls, including estimating, planning/scheduling, risk management, productivity measurement and cost control.
Proficient at developing, interpreting, and evaluating project reports.
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university
Masters degree or PhD is a plus
Professional Engineering (PE) License is not required, but preferred.
