Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking an experienced chemical engineer to work in our Materials Manufacturing area within the Fuel and Poison Materials (FPM) unit. This area is responsible for the research and testing of nuclear fuel materials, including test design, specimen fabrication, manufacturing development, and characterization.

This individual will play a key role in delivering fuel systems that enable increasing core performance objectives with improved quality and reduced cost. The successful candidate will work closely with a team of engineers, laboratory personnel, facility managers, and compliance experts to conduct test programs and develop new materials systems.

Responsibilities include:

• Working within a team to plan, design, model, analyze, manufacture, and deploy laboratory equipment, including nuclear, chemical, mechanical, structural, and electrical components and systems.
• Developing and implementing optimized process parameters for the production of novel nuclear materials, components, and systems.
• Conducting tests and analyzing results to inform the development of new materials and processes.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or a science-related field, plus 6 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or a science-related field, plus 4 years of relevant experience; or a PhD degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or a science-related field, plus 1 year of relevant experience. Additionally, the ideal candidate should have strong knowledge of materials science, control systems, and chemical engineering.

Preferred Skills

Experience in data analytics, statistical design of experiments, machine learning, and software programming skills in LabVIEW and Python environments are highly desirable. Additionally, experience in materials science, core material vendor contract and production oversight, and core material technical areas is preferred.
