    Description
    DEFINITION Performs repair and preventative maintenance duties on a wide variety of fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment.

    Assists Firefighters and Paramedics in instruction and usage of various fire and emergency medical services (EMS) equipment and instructs various types of equipment repairs and maintenance.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from an Emergency Vehicle Technician Manager. Exercises no supervision.


    EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES-Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Keeps track of materials needed for the work each day.

    Troubleshoots and repairs electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic malfunctions. Troubleshoots and repairs truck air conditioning systems. Makes repairs and performs routine and preventative maintenance on all Department vehicles and equipment, both in-shop and on-site.

    Operates computer to document repair work, parts used, and maintenance performed on a daily basis; processes and tracks repair orders.

    Visually and manually checks fire and EMS vehicles and equipment to diagnose problems. Performs road tests on vehicles to ensure proper operating levels. Emergency Vehicle Technician I (Continued) Coordinates with outside vendors for service and/or warranty work on fire and EMS equipment.

    Verifies that proper repairs are done on fire and EMS vehicles and equipment sent to outside vendors or repair facilities.

    Recommends and provides training as it relates to operations for Firefighters and Paramedics. Determines and recommends material and/or equipment needs to the Fire Fleet Manager. Monitor communications to respond to off-site requests for assistance.

    Monitors and instructs accordingly all safety-related issues as related to the shop area or any location where maintenance is being performed.

    Assists with review of specifications for new apparatus, equipment, etc. as requested. Keeps track of shop inventory and orders accordingly. Available to perform emergency repair work after hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.

    Work performed is primarily heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects Operates various emergency vehicles and equipment on an as-needed basis (for testing purposes).

    Operates computer, copy machine, fax machine, telephone, and all shop-related equipment as needed.

    Operates volt ohmmeter, amp meter, pressure gauges, nozzle and valve repair kits, calibrating tools for engines, brakes, micrometers and dial calipers, welders, grinders, saws, drills, torch, brazing rod, precision gauges, inspection and diagnostic equipment, tachometers, AC pump/gauges.

    OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES AND RESPONSITILITIES Ensures shop cleanliness and maintenance regularly. Conforms to applicable City and Fire Department SOP's and policies. Emergency Vehicle Technician I (Continued)

    May be required to work overtime and be on-call. Performs other duties as assigned. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of Maintenance and repair procedures. Equipment repair schematics and diagrams. Health and safety rules and regulations. Disposal and recycling techniques and procedures for hazardous materials used oils and other chemicals. Computers and related equipment, hardware, and software to input maintenance and repair records and inventory costs, materials, and hours. City policies and procedures. Troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing all Fire and EMS Providing cost-effective maintenance and repair services. Preparing and completing work orders and related reports. Ensuring observance of safety precautions. Providing and utilizing on-the-job technical and safety training. Resolving customer complaints and concerns. Effective oral and written communications. Emergency Vehicle Technician I (Continued) Ability to:

    Read and understand schematics, diagrams, and other information contained in repair manuals and reference books for the diagnosis and repair of Fire and EMS vehicles and equipment.

    Prioritize multiple work orders. Verbally communicate clearly and concisely to ensure on-the-job safety. Concentrate for long periods of time.

    Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

    A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be Experience:
    a High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years experience in fire apparatus repair and maintenance work or an equivalent combination of education and experience

    High School Diploma or GED License or Certificate: Must obtain Class B CDL Mississippi Driver's License within three months of hire.
