    Summer Program Leader, Oakland

    Yu Ming Charter School seeks individuals who are ready to lead a classroom and offer students an enriching summer experience. Applicants will facilitate pre-planned lessons, engage in activities with students, and provide a space in which all students can feel safe. The ideal candidate for this position is someone who is attentive, punctual, and aspires to continuously learn and grow as an individual and team member.

    Yu Ming Charter School is a non-profit, tuition-free network of public schools located in Oakland and San Leandro and open to all residents of California. As a leader in Mandarin Immersion education, our mission is to nurture our inclusive and diverse community to become empowered, engaged, and outstanding global citizens. We currently serve 864 students across three campuses, and continue to grow our enrollment each year. Our intentionally diverse student body comes from many racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds representing 70 zip codes across the Bay Area and 29 home languages. Founded in 2011, Yu Ming is the first Mandarin immersion public charter school in the state.

    Core Responsibilities

    Under the direction of the Expanded Learning Program Coordinator, the Summer School Program Leader performs a variety of duties. The following is a list of primary duties and responsibilities. Other duties to be assigned as needed.

    Duties

    • Plan and facilitate lessons and outdoor activities
    • Manage students' classroom behavior
    • Collaborate with other teachers and staff members
    • Maintain organization and cleanliness of spaces used during and after school
    • Promote a diverse space for all students
    • Follow a daily schedule to facilitate student learning

    Qualifications & Desired Characteristics

    • High school diploma
    • Experience working in extracurricular or summer programs is a plus
    • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally both orally and in writing
    • Professional level fluency in English required, secondary language skills such as Spanish or Mandarin are a plus
    • Demonstrated awareness of, sensitivity to, and competence in working with families from various culturally and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds
    • Superb interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, colleagues, and families
    • Flexibility and adaptability to change; ability to work in a dynamic learning environment
    • Driven adult learner dedicated to their own professional growth, including learning new and innovative teaching practices
    • Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and a solutions-oriented attitude
    • Belief in and commitment to Yu Ming's mission and core values

    Physical Requirements

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak, stand, talk, walk, sit, see, and hear (corrected or uncorrected). The employee is occasionally required to climb, stoop, push, kneel, reach (above shoulders and horizontally), crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

    COMPENSATION

    $20-$24 Hourly. This is a non-exempt position and eligible for overtime compensation.

    TIME COMMITMENT

    • Four weeks in June/July
    • Full Time or Part Time positions available. Operating hours between 8am and 5:30pm.
