    Actual assigned duties will commensurate with skill level. In this position, the incumbent works as a member of a survey crew performing boundary, control, hydrographic, topographic and construction surveys typically on a variety of projects related to flood control, environmental protection, water conveyance facilities, species conservation, and recreation. The work is in all types of terrain across the entire state of California, including on water bodies and rugged topography where access is difficult and away from headquarters. The employee is usually responsible to a supervisor at the work site but may work independently under their direction. This position is in frequent contact with and is constantly visible to the public.

    Special Requirements

    Candidates must possess a valid California driver's license when conducting State business that requires driving a vehicle, be able to travel around the state for a week at a time and be able to carry 50 lbs. across a distance on steep and uneven terrain. Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for a Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans) and produce evidence of minimum qualifications before being considered eligible for appointment.

    Range D of this classification requires possession of a valid California Land Surveyors License issued by the California Board of Registration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
