- Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree, including all courses needed to meet and maintain credential requirements.
- An appropriate, valid, State of Michigan Teaching Certificate, with the Learning Disabilities (SM), K-12, endorsement.
- A minimum of the completion of all student teaching required for the appropriate teaching credential; experience teaching Special Education in a secondary setting preferred.
- Appearance, grooming and personality that establish a positive example for students. Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic achievement, and classroom performance of the teacher.
- Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general education periodicals, professional journals, teaching procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write business correspondence and syllabi. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of directors, students, parents, and the general public.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve routine problems with minimal supervisory assistance. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, with staff and with the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness and consistency to the mission and goals established by the Board of Education.

- Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's IEP.
- Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
- Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
- Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
- Schedules team meetings and works cooperatively with child study team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
- Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
- Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction using appropriate sources including i-pads.
- Serves as primary contact for the parent.
- Conducts special education evaluations and reevaluations.
- Provides direction, supervision and evaluation of educational assistants as directed.
- Complies with School Board policies and all state/federal rules and regulations.
- Completes all district and state reporting requirements.
- Establishes and maintains student control and discipline in the classroom, school premises or during school activities.
- Employs and implements a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect consistent with district policies and procedures.
- Collaborates and consults with educational professionals and community service providers (i.e., social services, public health, medical providers etc.) regarding the needs of students.
- Provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom adaptations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
- Performs other comparable duties of a like or similar nature apparent or as assigned.
- Takes in-service training as provided.
- Must be self-directed and have the ability to follow directives from supervisors.
- Must maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Regular in-person attendance and punctuality are expectations of this position.

Position Details
Position Title: Special Education Teacher
Location: John Glenn High School
Position is for the 2024/2025 School Year

The primary function of the Special Education Teacher is to develop and provide specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities; evaluate and assess student progress against instructional objectives; follow State mandated due process procedures and function as IEP Manager to assigned students..
Qualifications:
The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District (Board Policy 1400).
Report to/Evaluated by: The Special Education Teacher is under the immediate supervision of the site Principal; the Special Education Teacher is under the indirect supervision of the Special Education Director.
Supervisory Responsibility: This position may supervise volunteers, student aides, and instructional assistants. All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment at all times.
Salary Range: $43,000-$79,000; Salary dependent upon education level and experience per Appendix B of the BTEA contract.
