    OVERVIEW: Responsibilities of the Research Veterinarian (RV) is to support the facility's Animal Care Project. This position will provide clinical and research support for the animals approved for use through the facility. All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned, arrive to work at 7 am and depart at 3:30 pm (M-F). You will be required to work on the weekends/holidays as scheduled. The weekend hours are from 7 am to 12 pm. This position is designated as essential. In addition, you will be expected to work extra hours during emergency situations or if any unexpected situation arise until work is completed. The RV will work collaboratively with the research investigators, research staff, facility personnel, IACUC, and others to maintain a quality animal program. This person is expected to be familiar with the day-to-day activities, personnel and issues within the animal program. We expect the RV to be forward thinking and create and assist in developing plans to enhance the learning abilities and performance of the staff that support the facility's Animal Care Project. The RV must possess strong verbal communication, teaching skills and be knowledgeable of pathology and veterinary medical terminology. The RV will efficiently write and maintain reports and develop and maintain an effective relationship with the Government staff.


    Primary Duties:

    • The Research Veterinarian (RV) shall work collaboratively with the research investigators and staff, facility personnel, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and others to maintain a quality program
    • The RV is responsible for directing and ensuring compliance with all regulations governing care, husbandry, health and welfare components to maintain AAALAC International accreditation
    • Provide oversight and collaboration for the research staff at the WRAIR-NMRC in support of the WRAIR / NMRC contract
    • The RV has the direct line and program authority and responsibility for the welfare and well-being of all animals approved for use through the IACUC)
    • Provide veterinary care for all animals approved for use by the WRAIR IACUC
    • Participate in IACUC activities to include: post approval compliance monitoring
    • Provide teaching and training for military veterinary residents and research staff
    • Develop, update and maintain use and care standards operating procedures according to The Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
    • Develop and maintain relationships with representatives of government, investigators, and contract personnel in order to coordinate activities and assist in investigations into matters concerning quality and client complaints
    • Interact with, and advise investigators regarding animal model selection, proposed procedures, animal procurement, coordinate housing/husbandry
    • Manages a program of disease detection and surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and resolution
    • Advise and oversee the surgical and post-surgical care, and provide oversight on animal handling, restraint, analgesia, pain management and proper methods of euthanasia in accordance with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals
    • Advise on the occupational health safety program including monitoring for zoonotic diseases; advise and monitor biohazard control policies and procedures relevant to the animal care and use program
    • Provide on-call support for emergency, weekend and holiday clinical support, availability for consultations for emergencies via telephone
    • Share "on-call" responsibilities with Veterinary Corps Officers on weekends and holidays
    • Serves on the IACUC and other committees, as appropriate; conduct pre-review of protocols prior to IACUC submission
    • Participate in interviews and selection of SoBran animal care personnel as requested
    • Generate weekly and monthly reports (monthly deliverables) utilizing Microsoft Office software and database systems as directed by WRAIR / Project Manager
    • Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facilities or immediate vicinity to appropriate contract and/or government personnel
    • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Manager

    Requirements:

    • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine; (ACLAM) certification required
    • Maintain all contract requirements to include quality of work, occupational health (e.g., vaccinations) and training
    • Knowledge of IBM-compatible computers, Microsoft Office software, and database systems is required

    Preferred:

    • Five years of pre-clinical research laboratory in a supervisory or management role is desired
