    Isidore Newman School seeks an innovative and self-directed part-time Lower School Science teacher for the academic year to design and implement engaging curriculum for PreK through 1 st grade students, with a focus on collaboration within the STEM team. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of instilling a love for science in young children and converting knowledge across life science, physical science, earth and space sciences, engineering, and technology into an inquiry-based, project-based curriculum. This position is a part-time position teaching Science to young learners (Pre-K through 1st grade). The Lower School Science teacher reports to the Head of Lower School. The successful candidate will possess excellent speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills; be successful in working with teams; and genuinely love to work with students and educators at the elementary school level.

    The Lower School Science Department values innovation, collaboration, and energy. We are looking for a passionate teacher dedicated to inspiring students and fostering a love for science/STEM through inquiry-based approaches and innovative curriculum development. The goal is to continue growing as hands-on, project-based science/STEM educators with a place-based focus.

    The most important qualifications include:

    • A bachelor's degree or higher in elementary education and 2+ years of teaching experience.
    • Knowledge of varied pedagogy and trends in instruction and curriculum design at the primary level
    • Practical knowledge of how to work with a wide range of different learners in elementary grades.
    • Professional orientation toward collaboration and innovation
    • A reflective practitioner committed to a continuous process of self-improvement and lifelong learning
    • Demonstrated patience, perseverance, and kindness in working with students, parents, faculty, and staff as well as a highly collaborative professional style.
    • Understand competing responsibilities to uphold confidentiality in relation to private materials and conversations while providing colleagues and families with the information they need to help the student.
    • Must meet and maintain any and all federal, state and local requirements to work in an educational setting.
    • Candidates must have experience supervising hands-on activities and ensuring safe lab practices, given the significant laboratory component in our Lower School science courses.
    • Enthusiasm for teaching early childhood and elementary-aged children in a collaborative environment is essential. Significant responsibilities include:
      • Planning and implementing curriculum based on Next Generation Science Standards
      • Creating joyful, hands-on activities with elements of exploration and experimentation
      • Incorporating STEM elements for a holistic learning experience
      • Collaborating on large-scale projects to develop 21st-century skills
      • Integrating science and STEAM across the curriculum and participating in professional development activities on a local and national level
      • Plan and execute lessons that meet the differentiated needs of our students including whole group, small group, and individual instruction, and fulfill the skills and content of the grade level.
      • Facilitate the educational and social development of the students.
      • Create an environment of respect and rapport that is safe and conducive to learning.
      • Use instructional time effectively.
      • Collaborate positively with colleagues around teaching and learning and have a growth mindset.
      • Assess the students in a variety of ways, both formal and informal, and use assessment to guide instruction for student growth, development, and learning. Complete report cards.
      • Communicate openly and effectively with parents including but not limited to Parents Nights, Parent Teacher Conferences, and Curriculum Conversations.
      • Participate in field trips and special traditions and activities of the grade level.
      • Maintain student records, display student work, and maintain a neat and organized environment for learning.
      • Model appropriate presence daily and ensure that students adhere to Lower School behavioral expectations.
