    This position provides services to monolingual Spanish-speaking individuals; therefore, fluent bilingual Spanish/English skills are required.

    We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Registered Dietitian to join our WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) team who is eager to help low-income individuals and families during pregnancy and early childhood. Our team helps families with nutrition and health education, breastfeeding and chest feeding support, healthy foods supplementation, and resources and referrals to other community organizations. Our ideal candidate will have great communication and customer-focused skills, be reliable, flexible, and comfortable with technology.

    GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
    Provides nutrition intervention for high-risk WIC clients, including counseling, development of an individual care plan, and follow-up appointments. Provides consultation, counseling and education to individuals and agencies concerned with proper food selection and nutrition; assists in promoting a nutrition program; does related work as required.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED
    Works under the general direction of the program supervisor.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED
    Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of positions in this class but may exercise lead responsibility over other WIC staff. Will provide guidance to student interns seeking experience in WIC.

    Typical Duties - Duties include, but are not limited to the following

    Program Culture
    • Provide customer focused services to internal and external individuals.
    • Ensure health literacy and cultural awareness skills are actively used.
    • Complies with the provisions of Civil Rights laws, regulations, and policies.
    • Work with an array of diverse populations and individuals to ensure services are provided to all community members.
    • Models' positive behavior and promotes team morale.
    • Ensure continuous quality improvement.
    WIC Services
    • Ensure verbal, written, and/or computerized information regarding participants and potential participants is kept confidential.
    • Describes the WIC program to participants, potential participants, and community members.
    • Explain program rights and responsibilities to participants.
    • Provide education and answers questions on using WIC program benefits.
    • Follow county, state and federal guidelines and policies.
    • Use multiple technologies for text, email, phone, video, and face to face communications.
    • Represents the WIC program by attending community events, meetings, and conferences.
    • Maintain and expands relationships with community partners.
    • Provide WIC services at remote locations throughout the county to decrease barriers for communities.
    • Document clear and accurate information per county, state, and federal regulations, and requirements.
    • Help participants, potential participants, and community members with a variety of WIC services.
    • Screen potential participants for WIC eligibility.
    • Schedule and reschedules appointments.
    • Perform weight and height measurements for adults, children, and infants.
    • Perform hemoglobin blood test for adults and children.
    • Complete growth, health, and diet assessments.
    • Provide individualized nutrition education and care plans.
    • Help participants set goals and provides tools to help them be successful.
    • Prescribe individualized WIC food packages per state and federal policy and guidelines.
    High-Risk Services
    • Provide initial and follow-up services for high-risk participants, along with medium and low-risk participants as needed.
    • Provide nutrition counseling, consultations, care plans, and resources and referrals to high-risk participants.
    • Manage specialty formula documentation, ordering, and communications with participants, health care providers, Oregon WIC program, and formula warehouse.
    • Manage and maintenance high-risk follow-up spreadsheet.
    • Monitors and manages high-risk reports.
    • Use principles of nutrition and diet therapy to provide evidence-based. recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Dietetic Association, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the International Lactation Consultant Association.
    • Maintain available resources for therapeutic/advanced nutrition, medical, and social services for high-risk participants.
    • Help guide, develop, and review policy and procedures.
    Training and Education
    • Provide training and support for staff and community partners.
    • Act as a preceptor for dietetic interns with the WIC program.
    • Attend quarterly Local Agency WIC Nutritionist (LAWN) meetings.
    • Help guide, develop, and review outreach and education materials.
    Program Building Blocks
    • Breastfeeding/Chest feeding/Breast Milk
      • Promote breastfeeding, chest feeding, and breast milk as the norm and standard.
      • Provide breastfeeding/chest feeding education and promotion during prenatal and postpartum appointments.
      • Provide support for individuals needing additional help with common challenges; positioning, relactating, dual feeding, pumping, tube feeding, and discontinuing.
      • Complete breastfeeding assessments for individuals requesting pumps or breastfeeding supplies.
      • Provide pumps education and individualized pumping plans for participants receiving pumps per policy and guidelines.
      • Connects and refers participants to community resources when needs are outside of WIC staff assigned scope and role.
    Nutrition and Health Education
    • Provide individualized participant centered education based on participants goals, wants, and needs.
    • Facilitate small and large group education classes and groups.
    • Offer education options that meet participants needs and wants.
    • Answer participants question regarding education offered and provided.
    • Ensure education is current, evidence-based information and within WIC staff assigned scope and role.
    Supplemental Foods
    • Assess participants dietary needs and wants.
    • Offer food options based on Oregon WIC food package guidelines.
    • Help participants utilize their entire WIC food package each month by offering ideas and suggestions.
    • Ensure families understand how to shop and what food they have been prescribed.
    Referrals and Resources
    • Make referrals for specialized care within the local WIC agency.
    • Offer referrals for specialized care in the community.
    • Complete referrals to community organizations and health care providers.
    • Provide resources to ensure participants' needs are met.
    Other job duties as assigned by your supervisor.

    Response Level 2: In the event of an emergency, employee makes a reasonable effort to report to work. Employee may be required to perform duties outside of their regularly assigned duties. Employee may be requested to work an extended or flexible schedule. Staff at this response level must complete Incident Command System 100 and 700 on-line or in-person training.
    Requirements for the Position

    EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
    1. Bachelor's degree with major coursework in foods and nutrition; AND
    2. Registered dietitian (credentialed) or RD eligible; OR
    3. Master's degree in nutrition; OR
    4. Any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position, as determined by Marion County.
    PREFERENCES
    • Preference will be awarded to applicants with at least one year of experience practicing as a registered dietitian.
    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
    • The finalist for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check; however, conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual for this position.
    • Must possess a current driver's license in the applicant's state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Marion County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services and review the driving record according to the Marion County policy and procedure for Driving on County Business.     • Typical Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with flexibility depending upon the needs of the department and program.
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of dietetics and nutrition and the ability to apply them to public health; recommended food requirements on body needs for various age, sex and activity groups, and others with special food requirements.

    Working knowledge of community agencies and resources, and the current problems pertaining to dietetics and nutrition.

    Ability to analyze menus and diets for nutrition adequacy and to make comparative costs studies of foods in relation to nutritional value; understand and perform consultative educational and training processes in carrying out a nutritional program; prepare and present effective written and oral material; maintain good working relationships with others.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    Operates a motor vehicle; sees using depth perception; stands; sits; moves about the work area; lifts up to 40 lbs. (lifts, pushes, pulls and carries can be combined if same weight amounts); operates a keyboard; speaks clearly and audibly; reads a 12 pt. font; hears a normal (or whispered) level of speech; works in areas that may be exposed to heat, cold, and noise.

    PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
    Marion County is a qualifying public employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, full-time employees working at the County may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan.
