    Director of Bands, Upper School

    The Woodward Academy Bands have a long tradition of excellence in performance including consistent superior ratings at state assessments (GMEA LGPE) and state and national music competitions. Additionally, The Robert W. Woodruff Marching Band has earned numerous class and division championships at marching band competitions. Woodward Academy is always well-represented by students in the GMEA District Honor Bands and All-State Bands. Travel opportunities, both domestic and international, are also an integral part of the curriculum. The Woodward Academy Bands have presented concerts in Italy, England, Germany, China, Hawaii and New York.

    This position involves teaching band in grades 9-12 and also serving as marching band director. This position begins August 1, 2024 and is for the school year. The successful candidate will be an excellent music educator who is energetic, hard working and motivated to maintain and improve this very successful program.

    Essential Job Responsibilities:

    • Coordinate and oversee all aspects of the Upper School Band program (grades 9-12) including curriculum development, organization and implementation of all rehearsals and performances during the school year.
    • Teach band classes in the Upper School each semester. Courses include Concert Band and Symphonic Winds.
    • Assist bands in the Lower and Middle Schools.
    • Design, implement and coordinate the marching band program.
    • Attend all football games and marching band rehearsals.
    • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with the Performing Arts Department Chair as well as colleagues in the Performing Arts Department, particularly with other members of the band faculty.
    • Carry out various auxiliary duties related to the general operation of the Upper School.
    • Create a learning environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interests, and learning styles of the students.
    • Maintain regular communication with students and their parents regarding progress.
    • Display a willingness to follow school and departmental procedures and regulations.
    • Turn in grades in a timely manner as well as maintain records of all classes.
    Required Skills:
    • Record of successful ensembles, including marching and concert bands.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills demonstrating tact and diplomacy
    • Competency with basic word processing, spreadsheets, and internet.
    • A solid understanding of learning challenges as well as the accommodations and differentiated learning techniques to support students' needs.
    • Strong organizational and classroom management skills.

    Minimum Job Qualifications:

    • Master's Degree in Music Education or Instrumental Conducting preferred.
    • 5+ years of successful experience as a band director preferred.
