    OB/L&D Nurse – Key Duties
    Floating Requirement

    Must be able to float between departments or local locations within 20 miles as needed.

    Job Summary

    Provides comprehensive nursing care to antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn patients using the nursing process. Ensures patient safety, stabilization, and quality care across all OB/L&D phases.

    Antepartum

    Assess triage patients >20 weeks gestation using obstetric triage acuity tools.


    Evaluate labor, fetal status, preterm labor signs, preeclampsia, rupture of membranes, decreased fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, and other acute/critical conditions (e.g., MVA, abruptio placentae).

    Stabilize patients for delivery or arrange transfer to higher level of care if needed.

    Intrapartum

    Labor assessment, evaluation, and fetal monitoring.

    Prepare expectant mother for safe delivery.

    Administer medications:
    Pitocin, misoprostol, methergine, hemabate, mag sulfate, terbutaline, labetalol, nifedipine, hydralazine, insulin.

    Stabilize the newborn immediately after delivery.

    Prepare for scheduled or emergency cesarean delivery.

    Postpartum / Newborn

    Provide postpartum care for vaginal and cesarean deliveries.


    Newborn care including:
    Hearing screen, lab draws, IV starts, medication administration (hep B, vit K, erythromycin, antibiotics)

    Assistance with circumcisions

    Care of opiate withdrawal and critically ill newborns

    Stabilization for transport, phototherapy, hypoglycemia management
