    National Radio Astronomy Observatory Position Description:
    Position Summary

    The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a diverse, exciting, and prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe.

    In addition to its scientific work, the Observatory is committed to outreach and education.

    The Observatory offers a wide range of programs and resources for students, teachers, and the general public, including tours, lectures, and online resources.

    The Observatory operates a variety of radio telescopes that span the globe, including the famous Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile.

    At NRAO we are seeking a Visitor Center Retail Supervisor. The position will be based at the Very Large Array site, 50 miles west of Socorro, NM. With a high level of professionalism, theRetail Supervisor will oversee management of the VLA Gift Shop and Visitors Center.

    Key responsibilities include managing Gift Shop staff, executing programs and offerings of the Visitors Center to serve visitors, the local community, managing retail sales in the Gift Shop and growing revenue.

    Plans, coordinates the ordering, shipping and receiving of merchandise, problem solving and providing excellent customer service.


    What You Will be Doing:

    • Managing the VLA Visitor Center/Gift Shop operations including: hiring, training, scheduling, supervising and problem resolution to ensure the that the Visitor Center/Gift Shop staff has well trained, knowledgeable and friendly staff.
    • Preparing purchase requisition, monitoring expenditures and revenue;
    • Monitoring sales through daily reports; resolving discrepancies, reconciling and recording credit card receipts and preparing sales reports, by establishing/maintaining proper fiscal procedures for all retail operations;
    • Overseeing maintenance of selection of stock, pricing, receiving, displays, signs and inventory; managing quarterly and year-end inventory utilizing computer to check for theft and shrinkage;
    • Facilitates adequate communication between NM Ops staff, fiscal staff and gift shop staff.
    • Compiling weekly/monthly and ad hoc reports regarding sales and costs of goods sold, productivity metric, inventory and other organizational and fiscal reports;
    • Directing customer service and sales activities in store; resolving customer issues and concerns; modeling and holding team accountable for outstanding customer service; perform opening and closing operations and fill in for sales clerks as needed;
    • Managing the online retail shop including inventory selection, pricing, and online store layout;
    • Proactive compliance with NRAO and government safety policies and procedures in own work area is expected.
    • May have to occasionally work weekends, after hours and travel.
    • May oversee or manage the operations of auxiliary services.

    The VLA Site is a remote scientific/industrial facility at 7000 feet elevation.

    Works in office environment, must be able to work at a computer with detailed and complex alpha and numerical information.


    Who You Are:

    • Minimum of High school diploma or GED. Preferred associates degree in retail or related field
    • You have a minimum five years of experience in retail, preferably in retail management, marketing or tourism. OR An equivalent combination of education and experience. Competency Summary
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking, and the ability to communicate comfortably and effectively with the public, educators, students, senior managers.
    • Must have a good working knowledge of personal computers, the Internet, Office software such as MS Word, Excel.
    • Ability to think critically and work independently with limited supervision.
    • Prior experience with credit card processing software and Point of Sale software required.
    • Proven experience in retail stock management and inventory control.
    • Proven ability to manage staff
