    Job Purpose Statement:

    The job of Instructional Assistant - Medically Fragile is done for the purpose of assisting in the general physical care and instruction of medically fragile students; implementing educational programs and/or modifying lesson plans, assisting students in developing daily living and behavioral skills; perform a variety of special health care activities appropriate to student needs, relieve the teacher of routine clerical and instructional tasks.


    Essential Job Functions:


    Adapts classroom work/homework under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing a method to support and/or reinforce classroom objectives.

    Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of assisting teacher in evaluating students' progress and/or recognizing the individual needs of the student.


    Assists student(s) in administration of medication, perform toileting, diapering, clothing manipulation, food preparation, feeding, gastrostomy feeding tube, tracheotomy care, cleaning, surface suctioning, skin integrity check, colostomy cleaning or care and intermittent catheterization.

    Assists in implementing educational programs for the purpose of meeting the individual needs of students i.e. media, computer programs, note-taking, direct learning activities)

    Assists in achieving physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.


    Confers with teachers and other district personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing student's objectives.

    Monitors individual students in the classroom, on campus and on the bus to ensure a safe and positive enviroment.

    Operates basic medical, exercise, therapeutic, instructional and office equipment; operate communication devices and adapts to computers as assigned.

    Participates in various meetings for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skills/knowledge.

    Performs record keeping and basic clerical functions, scheduling, copying, etc. for the purpose of supporting the teacher in maintaining student files and providing classroom materials.


    OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS


    Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

    Provides first aid using universal precautions, such as seizures or cardio-respiratory arrest.

    Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, etc.) For the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

    Attend district training, provided by a registered nurse on specialized healtcare proceudres prior to assisting with specialized health procedures eg.

    (catheterization use of hoyer lift,gastrostomy tube, tracheotomy care), receving a certificate of training completion. Job Requirements-Qualifications

    Knowledge to perform basic math including fractions, percents, and ratios (algebra and geometry at the secondary level), to read a variety of manuals, write and speak distinctly, type correspondence, memos etc.

    usually in prescribed formats, reports, and/or speak before groups, and to apply common sense understanding of detailed multi-step instructions. Keyboard/computer literate.

    Skills to perform multiple basic non-technical tasks.

    Specific skills to apply pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; communicate with persons of varied cultural and educational backgrounds; operate standard office equipment; prepare and maintain accurate records; and utilize pertinent software applications.


    Abilities to deal with a level of complexity of tasks that require significant coordinating of others person's schedules and/or activities; discretion, independent action and/or judgment with regards to working with people, diversity of equipment and interacting with persons and/or agenda that frequently change.

    Specific abilities to adhere to safety practices; be attentive to detail; implement established curriculum; meet deadlines and schedules; and work under time constraints; motivate and work with students (at- risk populations. Lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

    Responsibility in relationship to people includes leading and guiding.

    The resources required (people, equipment, facilities) necessary to perform job functions are of a moderate scope and moderate opportunity exists for significant impact (positive or negative) on the organization's mission.


    Working Environment:

    The job functions are generally performed in an indoor environment requiring the following significant physical abilities: reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling; sensory speaking, hearing and visual.

    May be required to use such equipment as wheelchairs, walkers or similar equipment in the care of students.

    Educational Requirements:
    High school diploma or equivalent or any combination of experience and education within the specialized field.

    Experience Requirements:
    Minimum of one year job related experience.

    Licensing, Certification, Testing Requirements:
    Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance; Tuberculosis clearance. CPR and First Aid certificates (certificates from an internet course are NOT acceptable). Will meet any and/or all Federal/State/District requirements.
