    The Role

    Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

    This position is for an Engineer Structural 2 in the Submarine Hull Planning Yard and Fleet Support group. The successful applicant will support the construction, ship alteration, maintenance, and modernization of SSN688 (Los Angeles) Class and the forward end of the SSN21 (SeaWolf) Class as well as perform internal research and development (IRAD) and specialized technical assessments.

    Additional responsibilities to include, but not limited to:
    • Maintain the ability to switch focus from long-term projects to quick turnaround, prioritized analyses to support urgent liaison requests from numerous installing activities
    • Learn/utilize Mathcad for hand calculations and learn/perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using FEMAP for modelling and NASTRAN for processing
    • Learn/apply basic AutoCAD or ShipWorks to measure and extract essential geometric data to facilitate finite element modeling
    • Apply technical writing skills to provide comprehensive engineering reports. Develop effective verbal communication proficiency and be well-organized and be able to translate subject matters into presentations for varied levels of NNS management and customers
    • Perform onboard site surveys (shipchecks) to gather crucial, pertinent information for structural design and calculations
    Must Have

    Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;
    Master's Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience

    Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

    Nice to Have

    The ideal candidate should have the following:
    • Knowledge to conduct general structural analyses using the allowable stress design method
    • Be a motivated enthusiastic individual with the willingness to learn and apply technically sound approaches and principals to resolve structural engineering problems, with varying complexities
    • Be able to drive issues to completion to meet scheduling needs while maintaining technical rigor
    • The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment; this may often involve multi-disciplinary interactions and mentor-mentee learning opportunities
    • Established familiarity with FEMAP 2020.2, NASTRAN 2022.1, MathCAD 15, AutoCAD 2020, ShipWorks 2020
