QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires knowledge of proper English usage, spelling, and grammar; standard office procedures and practices; the basic principles and practices of first aid; CPR. Knowledge of pertinent academic areas and learning situations; general needs and behaviors of high school students, and student recreational activities. Must have the ability to be flexible and willing to make changes necessary to meet the varied needs of the handicapped which is fundamental to the work; meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the required duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Receives and screens ill or injured students or staff; cares for or refers treatment to parents and others as required via established District policies and procedures; administers CPR/ First Aid as needed; organizes, prepares, maintains, and updates information for student health records, files, and emergency cards (yearly or as needed); maintains and updates immunization records on every student at assigned site; verifying accuracy and completeness in accordance with State Law; reviews student immunization records and notifies students, parents, etc., of immunization needs to meet State requirements; contacts parents regarding accidents or illnesses; prepares accident reports per District protocol and maintains records at school site; assists nurse in school health programs such as hearing/vision testing, immunizations compliance, and other health related duties as needed; assists school personnel with athletic/sports physicals upon request; maintains lists and files of students with medical and physical problems and advises teachers and staff of special health needs/accommodations; inventories and orders health office supplies; performs standard clerical functions such as typing/word processing, filing, record keeping, and similar duties in support of school office operations; attends in-service training sessions arranged by District office; maintains medication authorization forms for each student taking medication at school; administers emergency medical injections and medications (i.e. Diastat, Epi-Pen and Glucagon) in strict compliance with doctor's orders, District policy, and in accordance with State Laws; assists/administers medication in accordance with State Laws and keeps a record of medication administration in school health office; establishes and maintains logs/records of all student visits to the health office; noting times of visit, reason, and disposition; type/word process accurately at a rate required for successful job performance; apply District policies and procedures to specific situations; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Assists in supervising students to maintain effective learning environment, noting health/behavioral problems observed and implementing authorized health/behavioral interventions; provides teacher(s) and school administrators with relevant feedback and information on students' progress through observation and daily contact as it relates to health condition; establishes and maintains information and operational health records; escorts students with medical needs to and from transportation pick-up/delivery place on campus; assists in supervision of students with medical needs during lunch hours, assemblies, etc.; may assist teachers on field trips and CBI's as needed for students with medical needs. document /data collection on medication management while maintaining appropriate documentation and logs as needed for student's medication administration and other health needs and procedure; lifts and transports students according to District protocol; positions students in wheelchairs and other equipment; implements behavior interventions, and reinforcing learning situations; operates wheelchairs/travel chairs and mobility equipment as trained by licensed staff; documents and assists with medication administration as ordered by health care provider; feeds students - oral and tube feeding (vent as ordered by health care provider); monitors loading and unloading of wheelchair buses; takes direction from licensed therapy providers; provides toileting and diapering needs; follows safety standards; suctions as ordered by health care provider; administers aerosol treatments as ordered by health care provider; assists in administration of CPR/First Aid as needed; performs other duties as required to meet the varied health and educational needs of students; maintain calm and patience in stressful situations; operate standard office machines; establish and maintain cooperative and effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties; learn to assist in developing new competencies required by changing student needs; performs other related duties as required
One year of general clerical and typing/word processing experience. Some health-related experience preferred.
SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT WILL OBTAIN A CPR CARD AND FIRST AID CERTIFICATE WITHIN THE FIRST FIVE MONTHS.
Competency Is Required And Determination Of Competency Will Be Based On Experience And/Or Training For Specific Skills. Health Care Specialist Will Receive On The Job Training At Least Yearly And As Needed.
A CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK WILL BE REQUIRED OF THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT.
DUTIES OF POSITION: To prepare, maintain, and update student health/immunization records and files; to administer first aid and perform other routine non-technical activities in the assistance of ill and injured students. Employees in this classification receive indirect supervision from a school site administrator within a framework of well-defined policies and procedures. This job classification performs a variety of responsible functions in assisting administration with designated health maintenance/preventative activities as well as assigned clerical tasks. This job classification requires a high level of communication skills, organizational skills, and initiative. Current CPR and first-aid certificates are required. Assist teachers by caring for handicapped students' physical health needs and helping in their training and educational needs through the presentation of educational material or exercises. Employees in this classification receive general to direct supervision from a Credentialed School Nurse, Certificated Teacher and/or School Site Administrator within a well-defined framework of policies and procedures. This job classification will perform a variety of duties dealing with the health and safety of handicapped students and requires a high degree of positive contact with both students and certificated staff.
