    Geneva Public Library
    Library Clerk Job Description

    This is a part-time, permanent position in a public library, working 20-24 hours per week, 52
    weeks per year. Additional benefits include paid sick and personal leave after obtaining
    eligibility.

    This position is under the direction of the Library Director, and in accordance with City Code.
    Under general supervision, the Library Clerk performs clerical services; technical library services
    in circulation, reference, and processing areas; youth and adult programming services; facility
    and equipment services; and other related duties as needed.

    Clerical Services:
    The Library Clerk will extensively use the Microsoft Windows operating
    system and Microsoft Office suite; answer the phone; use a photocopy machine, fax machine,
    and other general office equipment; regularly read and respond to email; collect and record
    various fees; handle cash, checks, and electronic payments; and receive and resolve complaints
    or refer the public to the Library Director. The Library Clerk will also use the computer
    software, Apollo Biblionix, the library automation system, with on-site training.

    Technical Library Services:
    The Library Clerk will provide circulation services to the public. This
    includes creating member records in the library automation system; performing inventories;
    shelving all types of materials according to established policies and procedures; shelf-reading;
    checking materials in and out; inspecting materials for damage; moving carts and boxes full of
    books or other materials; regularly checking book drop; coordinating interlibrary loan requests;
    and ensuring the confidentiality of patron records. The Library Clerk will provide reference
    services to the public. This includes assisting patrons in person, by email, or by telephone;
    assisting patrons with computers, printing, and photocopying; assisting patrons with print and
    electronic resources; conducting reader's advisory services; conducting statistical surveys; and
    ensuring the confidentiality of patron requests. The Library Clerk will conduct processing
    activities. This includes creating material records in the library automation system; preparing
    new materials for checkout; researching series; mending materials; creating spine and barcode
    labels; applying book covers; processing and/or delivering mail; accepting and processing
    package deliveries; managing patron reserves and requests; and maintaining the accuracy of
    the library automation system.

    Programming Services:
    The Library Clerk will work individually and with other staff to develop,
    prepare, and present programming for youth, teens, and adults. Programs may take place at
    any time of the day or week, and throughout the year. Programs may be one-time events,
    while others may be weekly, monthly, seasonal, or once per year. Programs may be simple
    book displays or more complex multistep programs over a series of weeks.
