    The Park Maintenance Assistant is responsible for providing assistance to the overall care and maintenance of all Hempfield Township Parks & Recreation parks and facilities, including Hempfield Township Park, Hempfield Township Athletic Complex, and any neighborhood playground. This position is a part-time position within the department of Hempfield Township Parks & Recreation.
    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Assist in the cleanliness and orderliness of park grounds (lawns, shrubs, trees, landscaping, and vegetation), park facilities (pavilions, restrooms, courts, offices) and Athletic Complex.
    • Assist in maintaining athletic activity areas (dragging, nail dragging, prepping), maintain fences, benches, drinking fountains, sidewalks, restrooms and general repairs.
    • Cleans and removes litter from parks, parking lot, and other public areas.
    • Operates and/or drives a variety of light and heavy equipment as directed.
    • Prepares pavilions and fields for rentals and events.
    • Provide support and/or supervision for other Parks & Recreation or Township events, such as Santa in The Park, special events, etc.
    • Provide other services and perform other tasks as requested or assigned by the Director of Parks & Recreation, Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation, and/or Township Manager.
    Requirements
    Education & Experience: Previous experience in park maintenance setting.
    Necessary Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
    The individual must possess the following skills and abilities or be able to demonstrate that he/she can perform the essential function of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
    • Ability to operate equipment used to maintain fields and parks and the knowledge to troubleshoot general maintenance issues.
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time, and devise solutions to immediate problems without much time for consideration.
    • Must possess a general understanding of field maintenance and how they are maintained.
    • Valid PA driver's license and the ability to travel.
    • Skills in operating a personal computer with a general understanding of word processing and spreadsheet preparation.
    • Understanding of the English language.
    • Must obtain Act 34 Clearances, CPR, and First Aid Clearances within six weeks of employment.

    Work is performed primarily in the park and Athletic Complex. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of equipment.
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or listen; sit; use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, equipment, or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus.

    The work environment is a park environment. The scheduled work varies in terms of days of week and hours.
