GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
The Senior Application Developer serves as a lead technical contributor and supervisor responsible for designing, developing, integrating, and supporting enterprise and customer-facing applications that enable VIA's business operations and digital services. This position provides technical leadership and direct supervision to application development staff while maintaining responsibility for complex system integrations and solution design. The role requires strong technical judgment, leadership ability, and the capacity to translate business requirements into secure, scalable technical solutions. The Senior Application Developer works closely with business stakeholders, analysts, infrastructure teams, and information security staff to ensure application solutions align with organizational standards and long-term technology strategy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Designs, develops, and maintains web-based, mobile, and enterprise applications supporting internal operations and customer-facing services.
Provides technical leadership and direct supervision to application development staff, including work assignment, performance feedback, coaching, and training.
Coordinates and prioritizes application development work in alignment with business needs and project timelines.
Leads application design, system integration, and solution architecture efforts for assigned projects and systems.
Develops and maintains integrations using APIs, data interfaces, and middleware to support interoperability with enterprise systems such as ERP, CRM, and data platforms.
Implements and enforces security, data protection, and privacy controls within application design and development.
Analyzes, troubleshoots, and resolves complex application defects and performance issues in development and production environments.
Collaborates with business analysts and stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical designs and functional solutions.
Establishes and maintains technical documentation including system designs, data flows, integration diagrams, configuration guides, and operational procedures.
Reviews code and technical deliverables to ensure quality, maintainability, and performance standards are met.
Supports and integrates internally developed applications with vendor-provided and cloud-based systems.
Supports production systems, including incident response and resolution of escalated service requests.
Contributes to the development and improvement of application standards, integration patterns, and development practices.
Works effectively as part of a cross-functional team using structured development methodologies.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field and five (5) years of professional application development experience. Experience may be substituted in lieu of education on a year-for-year basis up to four years.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in a senior or lead role supporting enterprise or full-stack applications in a production environment.
Experience integrating applications with databases, APIs, and external systems.
Prior experience providing technical leadership or supervising.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Strong experience with modern programming languages and development frameworks (such as C#, Java, JavaScript frameworks, or similar).
Strong experience with relational databases and SQL.
Experience designing and implementing APIs and system integrations.
Knowledge of secure application design principles, authentication methods, and data protection practices.
Familiarity with cloud-based hosting platforms and distributed application environments preferred.
Understanding of software development life cycle methodologies.
Ability to analyze business processes and translate needs into technical solutions.
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Skill in developing and maintaining technical documentation and system specifications.
Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and balance technical and supervisory responsibilities.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Customer-focused approach to service delivery.
Must be able to maintain good work attendance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical ability required to be mobile, bend, stoop, stand, reach, and occasionally lift 5-25 pounds of objects, such as files, equipment and supplies, and books.
WORK ENVIRONMENTS:
Work involves deadlines and multiple priorities.
Works within normal office environment.
May be required to work any time of the day, evening or night during the week or weekend to include being on-call as scheduled.
