Purpose Statement
The job of Substitute Bus Monitor is done for the purpose/s of riding the bus with students of all ages, including those who have severe physical and mental disabilities while they are being transported to and from school. Assist bus driver by providing student supervision and assistance on the school bus. They reinforce safe riding standards and appropriate student conduct while riding on the bus. Assist in making sure all disabled students are secure in their seats and wheelchairs, fastening their seat belts and safety devises. Assists in loading and unloading the students on and off the bus.
This job is distinguished from similar jobs by the following characteristics: Ability to exit out of a rear or side emergency door within 25 seconds without help in an emergency situation. Must be in a bus seat while the school bus is in motion.
Essential Functions:
- Assist with the transportation of students in a safe manner (e.g. correct seats, enforcing established bus rules, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that students are physically and emotional prepared to learn by promoting safe bus riding procedures;
- Attends trainings (e.g. suctioning, tracheotomy cleaning, other special procedures, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a high proficiency level needed to care for special education students requiring critical care services;
- Communicates with department/ building administrators, teachers, and parents as needed for the purpose of providing feedback on student behaviors while riding on the school bus;
- Maintain confidentiality and complies with district policies, as well as federal and state laws and regulations for the purpose of ensuring student privacy;
- Manage student behavior and reports disciplinary concerns to the appropriate administrator(s) (e.g. Instructs on safety, rules, and regulations regarding behavior(s) on bus, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe bus riding experience;
- Monitor students, equipment, and materials for the purpose of student safety;
- Participates in mandatory school bus emergency evacuation drills for the purpose of understanding emergency procedures and keeping students safe in emergency situations;
- Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution;
- Serves as a role model for students and staff by demonstrating positive attitude and effective work ethic for the purpose of displaying the highest ethical and professional behavior in working with students, staff, parents, and outside agencies;
- Supervision of students while riding on the school bus for the purpose of ensuring student safety;
- Understand student's medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs for the purpose of a safe bus riding environment;
- Uphold and apply bus riding rules, regulations, and board policies for the purpose of supporting a positive and safe environment.
Other Functions:
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team with on school bus; and working in potentially loud environment while on school bus.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read and follow instructions; and understand written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: stages of child development and age-appropriate communication methods.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with others; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: to exit out of a rear or side emergency bus door within 25 seconds without help in emergency situations. Must be able to lift, push, and/or pull at least 25 pounds.

Responsibilities include: working with immediate supervision; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization's services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and some fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, 10% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations.
