    National Grid Ventures is hiring Lead Substation Engineer, Civil and Structural Engineering (Offshore Wind). This hybrid role can be located in our Brooklyn, NY or Boston, MA office.


    Job Purpose


    The Lead Civil / Structural / Project Engineer role is to support successful and on-time delivery of substation projects including supporting the capital investment plan, distribution and transmission interconnection projects, and other emerging work or new technologies.

    Substation projects include equipment replacement, asset separation, rebuilds and greenfield (new) substations.

    This position will be within National Grid Ventures (NGV), the unregulated investment arm of National Grid.

    NGV and RWE are part of a joint venture known as Community Offshore Wind (COSW), with the primary objective of bringing power from a planned offshore wind farm to a new 345kV HVDC terminal in the Brooklyn, NY area.

    Your skills and expertise will be applied predominantly to this role, but also to other NGV projects as needed.


    Key Accountabilities


    • With minimal oversight provide project, field, and real time engineering for all civil / structural aspects of substation design and construction.
    • Responsible for all phases of civil / structural engineering for the modification and renovation of existing substations, including heavily contaminated brownfield sites, as well as new substation projects.
    • Collaborate with cross functional / multi-discipline teams including Electrical Engineering, Design, Construction, Environmental and Construction Permitting, Operations, Security, Project Management, Estimating, Real Estate, and Legal departments to ensure successful project completion.
    • Create detailed civil / structural calculations and drawings for foundations as well as steel and aluminum substation structures and support frames while utilizing all applicable building and industry codes.

    Acting as Owner's engineer:

    provide project oversight by directing subcontractors (Civil / Structural / Architectural / Fabricators), interpret and review of submittals, including but not limited to calculations, drawings, material specifications, shop and construction / demolition drawings, topographical and GPR surveys, LiDAR scans, test pits and borings.


    • Prepare Scopes of Work, issue, review and respond to contractor bid packages and award contracts.
    • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, travel for site visits and interface with local governing authorities.
    • Conduct field inspections, determine cost effective solutions, and develop comprehensive engineering reports based on applicable design codes, engineering procedures and sound safety practices.
    • Develop and track schedules for engineering milestones.
    • Prepare technical specifications and work with Procurement to order equipment.
    • Provide technical guidance and support to less experienced engineers.
    • Investigate the adoption of new and innovative technologies.

    Qualifications


    • A Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Structural concentration preferred.
    • Minimum of 10 years' experience in civil / structural engineering.
    • P.E. license preferred.
    • General knowledge of the following is preferred: substation equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, switches, reclosers, metal clad switchgear, substation construction and maintenance techniques, electric utility operation practices.
    • Demonstration of a high level of personal initiative and ability to interact with a diverse group of personnel. Proven interpersonal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to proactively build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to obtain and share information that will benefit National Grid and our customers.
    • Demonstration of effective time management and task prioritization and capability to describe highly technical material to non-technical staff.
    • Proficient MS Office computer skills (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc.).
    • Proficient with industry software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, RISA3D, L-Pile, etc.).
    • Valid driver's license, dependable vehicle, and acceptable driving record.
    • Ability to physically navigate in and around an electrical substation.
    • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
    • Occasional travel to NGV offices in Boston, MA and Brooklyn, NY is required.

    New England, MA:
    $132,000 - $155,000 a year


    Downstate, NY:
    $141,000 - $166,000 a year
