    The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist carries out and/or supports a wide and growing set of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) programs and policies under the direction of the Manager of EHS to enhance the overall safety of Phillips Academy faculty, staff and students and to maintain compliance with all Local, State and Federal regulations related to environmental health and workplace safety.

    Programs include, but are not limited to, hazardous waste, universal waste, lead-based paint, oil spill control, asbestos, radon, mold, fire prevention, occupational safety, and other industrial hygiene and environmental services that fall under the EHS Department as mandated by the Academy Director of Facilities.

    The nature of this position is reactionary and responds to the requests of the campus community.

    When emergencies and/or extreme weather conditions occur, the functions of this position may be deemed essential, and employees must report to work and/or remain on duty during their regularly scheduled work hours or the work hours designated by their supervisors.

    Supervisors will inform employees when the functions are essential.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    Under the direction of the Manager of EHS, act as a key contact person for faculty, staff and student questions and interactions with regard to EHS-related concerns
    Provides assistance with workplace safety matters for OPP and the PA campus community
    Supports the Capital Projects and Operations groups to identify hazardous materials (asbestos, lead paint) and provide guidance for compliance and mitigation
    Supports safety training and annual safety inspections, such as fire prevention, back flow prevention and other inspections as needed
    Supports environmental monitoring for industrial hygiene concerns, radon, lead-based paint, asbestos, mold, facility discharges, storm water management and other EHS related issues as they arise
    Supports Phillips Academy's sustainability initiatives which may include recycling and insulation projects
    Participates in the On-Call Manager responsibilities and directs response to the appropriate personnel
    Performs and participates in EHS inspections and routine surveys and supports corrective action implementation
    Makes independent decisions on EHS-related issues and provides recommendations and solutions consistent with the required skill set for the position
    Supports Phillips Academy's Office of Physical Plant operations and maintenance activities, including confined space entry, asbestos and lead paint inspections, and job hazard assessments
    Conducts job hazard assessments in the field with OPP personnel, vendors and subcontractors to ensure the use of safe and environmental compliant processes and procedures
    Maintains EHS files, records and databases, and work order, including compliance tracking programs and recordkeeping systems
    Supports routine industrial, hazardous and universal waste management activities
    Attends meetings and training seminars to maintain a strong working knowledge of pertinent Town, State and Federal safety and environmental regulations
    Supports emergency response to EHS situations during normal business hours, after hours and/or weekends for the purpose of resolving immediate environmental health and workplace safety concerns

    Qualification Requirements:

    Safety and/or Environmental experience and/or training certifications for state or federal OSHA/EPA regulations
    Excellent customer service skills

    Minimum Education, Training, and Experience : Candidate must have 3 to 5 years' experience and/or training in the EHS field.

    State/federal safety (OSHA) or environmental regulatory programs certifications, including:

    Lead Safety Renovator and/or Lead-Based Paint Supervisor
    Asbestos

    Inspector/Supervisor
    40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response (HAZWOPER)
    First Aid/CPR/Bloodborne Pathogens
    Confined Space Entry and Rescue

    Candidate must be willing to participate in future training as needed and have a high school degree and a valid driver's license.

    Computer processing, email and computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat) are highly desirable.
