Starting Salary: $800 per week, plus room and board

Employment Dates: May 20 through June 28, 2024

Location: Camp Frias Frontier, Alamo, NV. Weekly transportation to/from Las Vegas and Alamo is provided.

The Head Cook is responsible to provide healthy, timely, nutritious meals for campers, staff and guests and to supervise Kitchen Assistant. This role also requires interaction with girls, adults, and staff and this is to be friendly and professional and ensuring allergies are accommodated. When not assigned to the kitchen, the head cook might be asked to help with girls and is responsible for ordering all food. The head cook needs to be flexible and provide meals on time. Girl Scout curriculum and corresponding training provided. Summer camp program begins May 28 through June 28, 5 days a week, Monday through Friday.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may need to be assigned according to the particular needs of your council and areas of supervision.

Before Camp:

Complete online training videos and quizzes
Become familiar with the Employee Manual
Prepare menus for camp sessions
Become familiar with and ready to implement COVID-19 protocols for all campers
Become familiar with kitchen operations and order food and supplies, keeping within budgetary restrictions
Set up kitchen and storage areas for food service

During Camp:

Supervise the work of the Kitchen Assistant.
Ensures that all kitchen and dining hall procedures/practices are consistent with Girl Scout, American Camping Association, state and local health standards in areas such as food preparation, food storage, dishwashing, insect control and fire safety.
Works with Camp Director in the areas of purchasing, inventorying and record keeping.
Make sure all kitchen staff is there at designated time for work.
Ensure that the food service is appealing in taste and appearance and is served at the proper temperature and set time schedules.
Has the primary role in food preparation
Ensure that pack-outs for cookouts are correct and available to units when they are requested
Ensure that campers/staff with dietary restrictions have appropriate food throughout their stay at camp.
Coordinate meal planning with special activities such as all-camp picnics and other special meals
Guides unit staff with food quantities for pack-out request
Post menus daily
Checks all food deliveries with original invoices
Dates all canned goods & perishables
Keeps accurate count of people eating in/out of dining hall for each meal
Implement COVID-19 protocols after each meal service and clean up after each session
Evaluates kitchen staff
Attends all staff meetings

Post Camp:

Supervise inventory of dining hall and kitchen equipment, supplies and food
Ensure that all equipment, supplies and food are stored properly for the off-season
Ensure that kitchen, pack-out area and all equipment is cleaned thoroughly
Other work as assigned by the Camp Director

Qualifications

Minimum 21 years of age with High School Diploma or equivalent.
First Aid/CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain such certifications
Current Food Handler Safety Training Card
Minimum one year of successful experience as cook
Experience cooking and serving over 100 meals per day
Excellent, effective English language abilities, both oral and written
Prior camping experience and working with youth a plus
Prior supervisory experience
Knowledge of the Girl Scout program is a plus
Patience, enthusiasm and good humor
Is very interested in providing a fun, safe, camping experience
Ability to train and supervise kitchen staff
Ability to take initiative in performing tasks without close supervision
Ability to read and follow the directions of a recipe
Ability to understand allergies and accommodate
Ability to understand that we have a no nut policy at camp and implement this in meals
Knows about the safe use and storage of cleaning chemicals in food preparation areas
Demonstrate a commitment and ability to interact with diverse populations.
Ability to relate and interact with all age levels and adults in a positive manner
Ability to work with staff, campers and vendors
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Willingness to live and sleep in camp setting approximately 6 weeks during the camp season up to 3,500 feet altitude.
Ability to work in the heat, sun, and varying weather conditions.
COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended
Current Girl Scouts of U.S.A. membership will be necessary upon hire.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This job functions primarily out of Frias Frontier, located in Alamo, Lincoln County, which is up to 68-acre property at 3,449 + feet elevation. Frias Frontier is subject to extreme temperature, snow and wind.
