- Must be 21years of age
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must demonstrate positive communication skills, punctuality, patience and ability to work collaboratively in a diverse environment with people of all ages and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents and the general public
- Maintain good hygiene with a neat and clean appearance
- Demonstrate positive attitude along with the ability to work cooperatively, willingness to accept instructions and training and open to feedback to improve individual performance
- Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and oral directives
- Basic working knowledge of personal computer and office machinery
- Excellent communication and human relations skills, must be organized and possess problem solving skills, and demonstrate initiative
- Must possess a valid MN driver's license Class D with a clean driving record, demonstrate safe vehicle operations, and be able to work autonomously with limited immediate supervision
- Successfully complete Type III van training which is provided by the District. CDL with bus endorsement preferred but not required
- General knowledge of school district operations, expectations, policies, processes and procedures and general knowledge of the transportation of students
- Ability to pass pre-employment, random, post-accident and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol tests consistent with state and federal law
- Ability to perform light maintenance
- Good attendance and punctuality
- Operate a school van in a safe manner under a variety of weather and traffic conditions and report any unsafe route conditions and recommend changes to the route.
- Train and assist student in van evacuations during drills and emergency situations
- Complete and maintain the requirements necessary to hold license and operate a Type III School Van
- Effectively support the functions, operations, and responsibilities of the Duluth Public Schools transportation services
- Assist in safely transporting students to various area locations following established DOT protocol and operations
- Manage and maintain efficient operations, notifications and communications of the assigned transportation route
- Must maintain confidentiality of student and family data, academic and behavioral accommodations, and work efficiently under designated time parameters and evolving situations
- Follow the school district calendar, typically M-F with an A.M. and P.M. and Midday routes
- General van maintenance including sweeping, removing trash, washing seats and windows, adding fluid and safety items to the van
- Making sure the van is safe to drive; accordingly, pre-trip vehicle in accordance with all applicable federal laws, state statutes and district policies
- Assist special needs students on and off the van as needed
- Monitor student behavior and determine appropriate discipline while treating students with patience and understanding
- Awareness of mental, physical, behavioral, and health conditions of students with a wide range of needs
- Knowledge of, and trained in, the use of school bus safety equipment, two-way radio, emergency reflectors, and fire extinguishers
- Complete a variety of forms, such as: rider attendance forms, trip tickets, pre-trip log, fuel and oil log, bus maintenance forms, stop arm violation forms, disciplinary forms, injury reports and accident reports, etc.
- Must attend all mandatory safety meetings and driver training, to include defensive driving, student management, First Aid training, and all other applicable training
- Maintain an exemplary driving record both on and off the job
- Maintain a positive working relationship with students, parents and school district personnel
