Job Function
Reporting into the Maintenance Manager, the Stationary Engineer/Multi-Skilled Mechanic will be based out of Baltimore, MD and will be responsible for ensuring the efficient operation, maintenance, and reliability of plant equipment, boilers, buildings, and facilities within a unionized environment. This role combines the technical proficiency of a licensed Stationary Engineer with the broad skill set of a Multi-Skilled Mechanic, requiring safe and compliant boiler operation, proactive equipment maintenance, and collaborative teamwork with hourly maintenance employees and instrumentation technicians. The position also supports the plant's licensed Stationary Engineer program by maintaining licensing status and providing reliable coverage as either the primary Grade 1 Licensed Stationary Engineer or designated back-up when required.
Responsibilities
Stationary Engineer Duties
Operate and maintain boilers, air compressors, cooling towers and related equipment in accordance with state and plant requirements.
Work with site leadership to ensure full compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards applicable to the operation of stationary engineering systems.
Follow the duties of the Station Engineer outlined in form CSOP-310.
Provide reliable boiler coverage during regular operations.
Serve as the primary Grade 1 Licensed Stationary Engineer or as a designated back-up when required by the Company.
Complete continuous education requirements as needed to maintain Grade 1 Stationary Engineer licensing.
Multi-Skilled Mechanic Duties
Pipe-fitting
Understands basic pipe-fitting theory and fluid dynamics. Knows proper use of levels, plumb bobs and layout techniques. Can identify and use various types of piping materials and schedules. Can operate pipe-threading equipment. Can perform proper gasket and bolt-up techniques. Can bevel and prep butt-weld fit-ups. Knows proper welding rod for given metallurgy. Able to install and repair various types of industrial valves. Able to run and connect copper and stainless steel tubing.
Welding/Burning
Understands concepts of welding, various joints and joint fit-ups. Set-up and use cutting torch. Stick welds carbon steel plate and structural material, stainless steel plate and structural material, carbon steel pipe (all positions). Brazing and soldering, carbon and plasma arc gouging.
Millwright/Machinist
Understands theory of thermal expansion. Operates shop lathe and milling machine. Ability to properly use calipers, micrometers, feeler gauges and dial indicators. Understanding of various types of pumps, pump components, lubricants and lubricating systems. Rebuilds gear boxes and gear reducers, pumps, blowers, screws and conveyors. Assists in maintaining spare parts inventory.
Equipment Operation/Rigging
Understands theory of rigging, rigging safety, use of barricades, load balancing and spreader devices hazard identification and tag lines. Operates forklift, front-end loader and hydraulic crane. Sets up and uses air compressors and pneumatic tools. Select and uses proper type and size rigging for a job. Sets up and uses chain falls and lever hoists (properly).
Electrical
Understands basic electrical power theory and related safety hazards and proper/safe work procedures, electrical elements and components, terms and definitions, overload protection, fuses and circuit breakers, electrical symbols on construction drawings.
General Knowledge and Education
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Possess math skills necessary to perform essential job functions and Quality requirements.
Must be able to perform addition, subtraction, division and multiplication, be able to effective use fractions and decimals and convert from one to the other.
Must understand metric measurements. Quality requires the individual to collect various types of quantifiable data and plot these on to a control chart. Uses of averages, ranges and standard deviations.
Must be able to read instruction manuals, written job procedures, safety policies, MSDS, hazard warnings, and Quality related material
Actively develops solutions, provides information and feedback toward opportunities for improvement in the maintenance function and applies corrective actions.
Provides feedback on stock and non-stock spare parts needed.
Enters Work Orders with sufficient details for planning.
Physical-Ergonomic
Lifting: Required to lift vehicle parts and components weighing up to 50 lbs. without assistance. Carries tools and/or equipment to job site which may be up to 300 ft. from tool locker or warehouse.
Climbing: Climbs stairs to catwalks. Erects and climbs scaffolding. Climbs portable and fixed ladders.
Crawling: Crawls beneath equipment to make repairs. Works inside of confined spaces in which entry and exit is through small excess ports requiring the employee to do considerable bending and twisting of his/her body to facilitate entry.
Pushing/Pulling: Pushes/pulls parts (weighing up to 50 lbs.) into place for installation and/or repair.
Cramped/awkward positions: Pushes/pulls parts into place while standing or stooping in cramped areas requiring considerable physical agility.
Bends/stoops: Bends over equipment to repair parts and to lift parts in to or out of vehicle. Stoops to make repairs on parts located close to the ground.
Walking Surfaces: Walks on wet outdoor surfaces such as asphalt and concrete.
May work on surfaces slippery from oil or product.
Pound/hammer: Uses 12 lb. Sledge hammer to loosen bolts and to perform other activities.
Elevated spaces: Walks and works on elevated catwallks and structures up to 90ft. above ground level.
Required Experience
Stationary Engineer Licensing Pathway
Possession Grade 1 Stationary Engineer license from the Maryland Board of Stationary Engineers.
Demonstrated ability to complete required coursework, examinations, and practical applications for continuous education requirements to maintain license.
AND
Previous experience as a Multi-Skilled Mechanic.
5–8 years of relevant industrial maintenance experience.
