    Job Title: Speech Language Pathologist

    Reports To: Director of Special Education

    Primary Purpose:

    To facilitate the design and delivery of Social Studies curriculum and instruction to maximize student learning at Secondary Campuses.

    Qualifications:
    • Master's degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university
    • Valid Texas license as a speech-language pathologist granted by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SBESLPA) or Bachelor's degree.
    • Valid Texas Education Agency speech therapy certificate
    • Ability to use the accepted tests and measurements to assess communication disorders and condition.
    • Knowledge of evaluation, habilitation, and rehabilitation of speech-language disorders and conditions
    • Ability to instruct and manage student behavior.
    • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
    • One year of supervised clinical speech-language pathology experience
    Major Responsibilities and Duties:

    Planning and Oversight:
    1. Cooperate with local education agency, community and/or state programs to affect comprehensive services.
    2. Work cooperatively with school personnel to accomplish goals and objectives of the local education agency.
    3. Attend meetings, such as campus faculty meetings, special education meetings, ARD meetings, and parent conferences.
    4. Schedules interventions using a variety of service delivery models, including classroom intervention consultation/collaboration and pull-out as appropriate to meet the student IEP needs in the least restrictive environment.
    5. Applies a systematic workload model to facilitate the organization of the speech-language program within the school.
    6. Collaborates with school personnel, such as teachers, psychologists, and diagnosticians to determine programming and support to best meet the needs of students.
    7. Meet with related school personnel to coordinate specific objectives for individualized educational programs.
    8. Keeps data for program planning and decision making for students.
    9. Submits reports which meet local and state requirements within legal/required timelines.
    10. Maintain current and accurate files for use by authorized school personnel.
    11. Safeguard confidentiality of student records
    12. Completes records for third party reimbursement accurately and in a timely manner as appropriate (SHARS)
    Screening, Testing, Diagnosing, and Advising
    1. Works with a team of professionals to carry out a screening process while using appropriate screening instruments.
    2. Administers formal and informal assessments.
    3. Observes students in educational environments.
    4. Selects appropriate testing instruments based on individual student needs.
    5. Administers tests according to acceptable testing procedures and standards.
    6. Obtain pertinent case history from other professionals and parents.
    7. Analyze and interprets information to make recommendations regarding the need for speech-language services.
    8. Integrate data from a variety of assessments, techniques, and sources.
    9. Determine the effects of the student's impairment in regard to accessing the general curriculum.
    10. Presents and explains data to principals, teachers, parents, and other team members before/during and IEP meeting.
    11. Prepares an accurate evaluation summary with appropriate recommendations when a student is both eligible and ineligible.
    12. Present information to school personnel about speech disorders as they relate to literacy and interactive communication skills.
    13. Provides information to school personnel, parents and non-school agencies about current procedures and program guidelines.
    14. Supervises undergraduate interns and speech-therapy assistants.
    15. Evaluates effectiveness of personnel assigned to speech-language pathologist.
    16. Maintains records regarding personnel supervised.
    17. Cooperates with college/university training programs.
    18. Sponsors professionals during Clinical Fellowship Year
    Managing and Conducting Therapy:
    1. Collaborates/consults with classroom teachers in the management of speech language disorders.
    2. Plans evidence-based interventions appropriate for individual students and groups of students
    3. Implements the service delivery model most appropriate to the students' degree of severity.
    4. Provides activities commensurate with students' interests and aptitudes.
    5. Modifies therapeutic instructional approaches and other functions from data gathered during therapy.
    6. Selects/implements evidence-based practices which support the goals and objectives of the speech program.
    7. Designs, selects and/or modifies special curricula/therapy content.
    8. Uses a variety of equipment, materials, devices and aids.
    9. Provides feedback and reinforcement to students.
    10. Uses systematic procedures for review of student progress.
    Adhering to Local, State, Federal Regulations and Ethical Practices
    1. Completes all procedural documentation appropriately.
    2. Demonstrates knowledge and use of statewide testing procedures.
    3. Abides by professional code of ethics.
    4. Develops appropriate IEPs based on a student's strengths and needs.
    5. Demonstrates awareness of professional performance in all environments
    6. Manages time efficiently by submitting and maintaining an appropriate schedule for speech-language instructional services.
    7. Provides and follows schedules of campus location therapy is provided.
    8. Keeps an updated schedule of each student's therapy and a spreadsheet of all students and services.
    9. Arranges travel time to maximize contact with students and accomplish other duties efficiently.
    10. Participate in continuing education opportunities.
    11. Use appropriate district approved physical safety techniques including restraint.
    12. Liaison

    SHARS/ MAC / RMTS:

    Northwest ISD participates in the School Health and Related Services (SHARS) and MAC programs which allows our district to request Medicaid reimbursement for certain health-related services. The Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee determines SHARS services.

    As a special education staff member, you will be required to train and bill for SHARS reimbursements for students on your caseload. Trainings will be provided for SHARS, for RMTS (Random Moment in Time Studies), where staff are chosen randomly to answer a few questions, and for MAC (Diagnosticians and non-Personal Care Providers only). Training will be provided at the beginning of each school year as well as on an "as needed" basis for new hires.

    Supervisory Duties:

    May direct and monitor the work of speech-language pathology assistant(s) or speech aide(s).

    Equipment Used:

    Personal computer, printer, fax machine, copier, calculator, and shredder.

    Working Conditions

    Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling may be required. May be required to move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. Regular district wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; moderate lifting and carrying. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning student with physical disabilities.
