    Why Jackson: Holtz Children's Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center is one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the southeast United States, where UHealth - University of Miami Health System physicians treat children from throughout Florida and the Caribbean. Holtz Children's is known worldwide for its care of critically ill newborns in its neonatal intensive care unit, which is one of the largest in the United States and boasts some of the best medical outcomes. In collaboration with the Miami Transplant Institute, Holtz Children's is one of only three centers in the country that specializes in pediatric multi-organ transplants. It is home to one of only three state-accredited comprehensive children's kidney failure centers and one of the largest pediatric kidney transplant programs in the world. The Children's Heart Center at Holtz Children's is the only comprehensive children's heart program in South Florida. In partnership with the University of Miami, Holtz Children's also trains the most pediatric physicians of any medical center in the southeastern United States.

    Position Summary:
    • The Lactation Specialist RN provides inpatient lactation education services to promote breastfeeding as the optimal form of infant nutrition to parents, children, and families for JHS Lactation Services program.
    • An incumbent provides training and support to mother/infant pairs to ensure that breastfeeding is a positive experience, thus increasing the duration of this health-enhancing and cost-saving practice.

      Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Collaborates with nurse midwives, obstetrical, pediatrics, medical and nursing teams to identify mothers and newborns at risk for breastfeeding problems and optimize anticipatory and postpartum care.
    • Provides follow up support or facilitates appropriate referral for post discharge support.
    • Develops a nursing staff lactation support teaching program in collaboration with the clinical educator and Breastfeeding Task Force. Teaches and mentors JHS mother/baby nursing staff in clinical breastfeeding support skills.
    • During clinical interventions, incorporates teaching the medical house staff fundamentals of successful breastfeeding and lactation support, early identification of breastfeeding problems and appropriate referrals for prompt intervention.
    • This teaching will be structured in cooperation with the clinical Attending.
    • Utilizes evidence-based research and knowledge to support clinical, educational and consultative roles in order to provide a scientific basis for professional nursing practice.
    • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team and in research opportunities that will advance the knowledge base and practice of lactation services.
    • Participates in interdisciplinary performance improvement and clinical research to promote evidenced-based lactation services and improve clinical outcomes.
    • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of practice, guidelines, policies, procedures, and protocols within the area of lactation.
    • Participates in the design, implementation and evaluation of programs and projects in lactation and breastfeeding to meet the goals and objectives of the JHS.
    • Identifies and analyzes system barriers to the provision of excellent care and develops plans to resolve barriers, in collaboration with JHS medical and nursing teams and the Breastfeeding Task Force and fulfill the requirements of the Baby-Friendly Initiative and the Academy of Pediatrics Breastfeeding Policy Statement.
    • Demonstrates the Professional Leadership and Development Role Model through conduct, appearance, communications, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
    • Assumes responsibility for professional self-development.
    • Develops and provides in cooperation with JHS IBCLCs and parent educators a breastfeeding resource service for the other JHS in patient units.
    • Participates in community outreach in dialogue with the Breastfeeding Task Force, La Lecher League, WIC and Healthy Start in developing cooperative strategies to support breastfeeding for JHS clients and to increase awareness of lactation support services at JHS. Maintains certification as a lactation consultant. RN Lactation Consultants must have a minimum of 15 continuing education hours per year.
    • Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency check-list. Utilizes job and unit specific equipment as required.
    • Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise).
    • Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
    Qualifications

    Experience:

    Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.

    Education:

    Associate's degree in Nursing is required. Bachelor's degree in Nursing is preferred.

    License Certification:
    • Valid Florida RN license is required.
    • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
    • Certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required, or ability to obtain within first 12 months of employment.
    • Must meet and maintain valid and current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by regulatory and/or nursing standard of practice for the specialty.
