    Certified Wound Care Registered Nurse, RN

    Fulltime, 7am-5pm, Days

    Main Function


    • Develops comprehensive wound management program which provides direct and indirect care through the application of the nursing process. The wound care specialist assists nurses with assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating care of patients with ostomies, complex wounds, pressure ulcers, and alteration in skin integrity. The wound care specialist develops, implements, and evaluates standards of nursing care, collects and analyzes patient care data, and oversees patient's plan of care in order to achieve positive clinical outcomes. Develops and implements evidence based practice guidelines and protocols for wound treatment and prevention of pressure ulcers. Responsibilities also include managing outcomes for wound care while acting as specialty consult and educator to Nurses, Physicians, Physical Therapists, and other providers of wound care for all areas of the organization. The wound care specialist also collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to assess patient's need for nursing care and patient/family education regarding wound management related to diabetes, vascular diseases, pressure ulcers, surgical wounds, and entercutaneousfistula or skin tears. The wound care specialist addresses physical and psychosocial rehabilitative and discharge needs of patients.

    Qualifications


    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Serves as a clinical expert in area of specialty within the standards established by the Wound Care & Continence Nurse Society, National Alliance of Wound Care, and National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel.
    • Adheres to the UMMC Midtown Campus clinical practice guidelines relating to the scope of wound care.
    • Uses an interdisciplinary approach to wound management, follows the UMMC Midtown Campus clinical practice guidelines to minimize and prevent pressure ulcers.
    • Establishes and achieves clinical priorities for quality improvement initiatives related to wound care.
    • Assists with compilation and analysis of pressure ulcer incidence and quarterly prevalence studies as well as participates in product utilization studies.
    • Provides formal and informal education on wounds, skin and ostomy care for all levels of the clinical staff to increase competencies.
    • Initiates communication with the clinical staff; plans educational programs to ensure a consistently high level of service to patients with ostomies, complex wounds, fistulas, pressure sores and incontinence.
    • Has a positive relationship with nursing staff, hospitalist, physician assistants, residents, Attending Physicians, social workers, case managers, nutritionist, physical therapist, and materials management.
    • Initiates corrective actions to reduce expenditures and enhance revenues without compromising quality of services.
    • Attends and actively participates in meetings and chair committees as required.
    • Demonstrates support and compliance with UMMC Midtown Campus' mission, vision, values, philosophy, goals, objectives and policies.
    • Performs additional functions and other activities assigned.

    Licensure:
    Currently licensed in the State of Maryland.


    Education:
    Certified as a Wound Care Specialist (WCC, WOCN, or CWCN).

    ASN or BSN, with valid MD License


    Experience:
    One year recent experience in clinical specialty area in wound care is required.


    Contacts:
    Administration, Department Heads, Physicians, Supervisors, vendors, patients, professional employees, clerical and hourly employees, public at large.


    Physical Demands:
    Walking, standing, sitting and lifting involved. Must be able to lift 50lbs. at a minimum.


    Working Conditions:
    Works in well-lighted and ventilated hospital environment.


    Hazards:
    Exposure to all types of illnesses, disturbed patients and environmental hazards including contact with body

    fluids potentially infectious for blood borne pathogens
