Position Summary


Under general supervision of the Manager of Grounds and Landscape, the Lead Groundsworker is responsible for planning, training, and coordinating the work of grounds maintenance staff within University Housing Services – Grounds Maintenance.

This role includes inspecting completed tasks, providing hands-on support, and offering lead work direction to a team of up to 3 employees (1-Groundsworker, 1-Gardening Specialist, and 1-Student Assistant).

Key responsibilities include maintaining the grounds surrounding residential facilities, supporting safe and welcoming living environments, and ensuring efficient, high-quality execution of daily grounds operations.

The Lead Groundsworker upholds a culture of teamwork, safety, and service excellence in alignment with the Hornet Honor Code.

This includes fostering respect and care in team interactions, maintaining inclusive and accessible outdoor spaces for resident students, and modeling integrity and pride in their work as part of the Sacramento State community.


FLSA:
Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range:
$3,890 per month (Step 1) - $5,555 per month (Step 19)

CSU Classification Salary Range:
$3,890 per month (Step 1) - $5,555 per month (Step 19)

Knowledge

Minimum Qualifications


Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and tools and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and caring for flowers, shrubs, lawns, and trees.

General knowledge of common plant diseases, pests, and weeds; approved methods and materials used in their control and eradication, horticultural methods and materials; and planting and growing requirements of plants commonly grown in California.

Abilities


Ability to lay out, coordinate, and oversee the work of others; provide training, interpret policies, and explain methods and procedures; inspect and evaluate the work of others; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and perform general gardening and grounds maintenance work.

Experience

Two years of experience in planting, cultivating, and maintaining flowers and shrubs, or in general grounds maintenance work.

License

Some positions may require possession of a valid California driver's license.

Required Qualifications


Knowledge, Experience, & Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and caring for landscapes and grounds.
Experience with operating and maintaining equipment such as tractors, riding mowers, edgers, weed trimmers, and lining equipment.
Familiarity with PC applications such as word processing, email, spreadsheets, and a computerized maintenance management system.
Knowledge and experience in repairs, maintenance, and operation of irrigation systems, including computerized irrigation control systems.
State of California Department of Pesticide Regulation, Qualified Applicators' Certificate Category Q.

Licenses

Possession of a valid driver's license and maintenance of good driving record.

Physical Requirements

Ability to occasionally lift and carry equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs. maximum.

Preferred Qualifications

Three years of experience acting in a lead capacity for a Grounds Department in an institutional setting.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Possession of a valid driver's license and maintenance of good driving record.
State of California Department of Pesticide Regulation, Qualified Applicators' Certificate Category Q.
