Okay...I'd be the first one to say 'trust your gut'...but that is NOT AN OPTION when you are in a position like this...I don't care how much experience you have, you are a parent first...It's not all about you when you have a family to support...and these 'professional snakes' know that... I remember had passed for something similar, but I was younger, still living with my parents, working only for paying my studies... so I used to pass fast from a company to another. I couldn't imagine being on your shoes, but you've done well, and I think I'd had done same.
I've been here on the same chair/job for the last ten years, in Madrid. Every week I feel this will be my last moth, but as that moment comes I'm looking for something near my home, as I spend everyday more than two hours in train (I don't leave in Madrid), or at least another job, only for morning beacuse if I change I'll loose my reducted day for having a child.

No, Sandra, you ARE blameless. You acted in good faith, albeit naively. But that is not your defect. You should, however, learn from the experience. Over the years as an employer, employee, and contract consultant -- including an early stint as a recruiter with a major Chicago-based employment agency -- this is what I've learned:
1) If non-local travel for an interview you've been invited to, the prospective employer should always pay travel expenses. Otherwise, you have no indication that they are seriously interested in you.
2) If you have a substantial work history and samples of prior work and letters of recommendation, that plus the interview discussions should be enough for them judge you on. The idea of submitting full proposals is a formula for having your work and ideas stolen. And every legitimate potential employer understands that and will not ask you to do that.
3) You should never trust a "recruiter" (unless he or she has found you a job in the past). Most have a far weaker connection to the prospective employer than they represent to you. Indeed, most these days don't even have a contract or a written job order from the employer and are throwing shit against the wall in the hope of having something stick.
Don't fret overly much. Console yourself with the fact that the "freelance" who was hired in your stead, unless exceptionally savvy and experienced in contract work, will likely get screwed out of a pile of pay for work performed. Same thing happens in the reverse. Companies put you through a lot of time and effort preparing proposal usually in response to an urgent request. Sandra, before beBee arrived I was once recruited cold by CBS/Viacom Corp. HQ in New York City through LinkedIn. This was for a corporate communications gig representing the company before the news media (not a job in the new division, but corporate comms with expense accounts, etc). I ended up not taking the job, but I did ask that they fly me in to NYC for the interview and pay for all expenses -- plus have a limo or town car pick me up and return me to the airport. They agreed and wanted to do this in one day. However, being a native NYer and pushy, I wanted to stay a bit longer while there to see some friends and family. So I convinced the HR folks to put me up at swanky hotel overnight. I rightly assumed they had some corporate deal already worked out for such occasions.
In the end, I turned down the job for personal and family reasons. My point, however, is that if an out-of-town company really wants you badly enough based on your impressive credentials and a phone or online interview, then demand they pay for all travel expenses per the in-person interview. Yes, it's a bit risky but will show you just how interested they really are in hiring you. Plus, they may be impressed by your determination and bold ask. Just something to consider for next time.

GrinbergSandra: first, I commend you for opening sharing your experience. I understand that this ultimately turned into an expensive and frustrating experience, which is unfortunate. However, on the positive side you were proactive and determined. I would think of it this way and not get discouraged. Job interviews and being hired are like selling insurance or whatever door-to-door. You have to knock on 100 doors to have change. Then, perhaps 5% of 5 people express interest and invite you in. Three of the five don't buy what's you're selling, but the other two make the purchase and YOU receive the profit. But if you hadn't knocked on 100 doors you would never have made the ultimate sales. Here's another example: it took Thomas Edison thousands of failed tries to invent the light bulb. But he viewed each failed attempt as a step in the right direction toward achieving his goal, which he did through laborious persistence and hard work. You too will get the job you seek, just keep persisting, maintain confidence in yourself and a positive outlook. I can't wait to read your blog post about finding and getting the job that's the best fit for you. This WILL happen if you believe it will and persist.

I have had my share of interviews leading to no where and it seems the process is getting longer and requiring several interviews. I have had 5-8 interviews for a job. A couple of times I got through to the final interview and the company decided not to hire at all. Another time, I was on my way to fly out to meet with the final decision makers and got a call at the airport on my way to their HQ asking me if I had signed a non-compete. I had to turn around and go home. They never asked in the beginning of the process. Hang in there!!!!! It is hard to find a position in a city where you don't reside. Good Luck!!!!

What did put me in the position to help people prepare & practice for interviews is a wide ranging skill in conversations with HR and hiring managers over close to two decades. Getting mission critical stuff accomplished on HR/Payroll systems.
I sent this post to someone I am working with, and what I said in the email may help a lot of other people.
It is generating the energy of conversation that brings the next job offer into existence.
The old ways are very reactive & static. The new ways are rather uncharted and very unique.
But, whatever the specifics of the job description are - if you know you can be trusted to do the job. Shout that from the rooftops.
And to have that value pop off the page of a resume/profile, you need someone like @Lynda Spiegel who will be able to extract your unique value & put it into a context that gets found, that translates to those professionals who read resumes daily or are accountable for hiring the right candidate, so that you can make it to the playoffs of the job search, the interview process.
