Awesome @Anne Thornley-Brown! Even if I weren't planning a trip for team building, just to visit Toronto would be great. It's been years since I was there. I'm only 4.5 hours from Toronto. The videos were SO enticing. Lake Ontario is beautiful and Toronto looks so clean. It appears you have some great team building workshops coming up. I just told someone the other day I want to learn how to create cool videos, so I'm looking for a class in town. Maybe one day I will have a few people to work with me (even if it's just a hobby), it would be fun to go to the video DIY team building workshop.

Im not in the big business @Steve Blakeman but I'm totally into 'gut feelings' and Steve Jobs :-) Great to see that quote!
Love this one: "A brilliant insight into a consumer doesn't come from the masses of statistical data on the way humans behave, it is derived from a smart planner who uncovers a human truth and then seeks to support that hypothesis with the numbers." Thanks! I'll share it because I think it's very worthwhile for others (into small - big - huge business) to read!

Today I had a 60:1 ROI. Can I repeat that? I know what the ROI over the last week, last, month, last quarter, last year is.
    Michael O'Neil
    23/03/2017 #8 Anonymous
Gut feel is never tested by capturing enough data to build a ROC curve. The business publishing literature is packed with the single massive success stories. When you have had a single massive success you can retire on that and never test whether the formula is repeatable. The real test is repeatability.

@Steve Blakeman, Are we talking here about whether Netflix understands the role of analytics in their decision making process or something else entirely?
If the decision is a one off, the role of analytics and any modelling you might do is quite different from when the decision is about high frequency customer in channel engagement decisions. Be very careful not to confuse the two. The role of analytics, and how you deploy them and how they are integrated with the business decision making process is the new frontier.

@Steve Blakeman Nice buzz Steve. Storytelling is a great way of getting something across and the gut feel always win. I gotta feel it even if data and facts are presented to me. Enjoyed reading this buzz.

#2 I think you may have missed the point @Nick Mlatchkov... for Netflix its how they go through the process of selecting content ideas to produce not about how much the service costs to the end user

#3 thanks @Sara Jacobovici, am really delighted that you enjoyed reading the piece as much as I enjoyed writing it. I do try to tell stories with what I write so I am glad you called that out and also that you got my point. I think your Star Trek example is spot on... a gut feel idea that didn't initially capture peoples imagination but became a huge global franchise. Appreciate you taking the time to comment Sara!

Great post @Steve Blakeman. I read your post as you telling me a story. And that works for me because if you presented the data and statistics as to what worked better, I would have lost you at the beginning. This way, I read your post as it flowed from beginning to end with ease and was able to "get" your point. Your questions and answer is relevant: "So what's the conclusion here? Is one better than the other? Does gut feel beat big data? Or vice versa? If so, which one wins? And in what ratio? Well if we really knew the answers to these questions then I guess that we would all be doing it..." We are humans in human services, therefore, we are just as unpredictable as our customers. The gut in a way is like an umbilical chord we attach to others (I guess with a metaphorical velcro), to sense what is happening with the consumer. Steve Jobs said One factor that I would incorporate into your discussion is timing. Many times (pun intended) someone has a great idea and yet, the public is not ready to get it, until later. An example is in Television with the series "Star Trek". It went from fighting to stay on air, to a multi-billion dollar industry. Gene Roddenberry's gut was right on, the public needed time to digest. Finally, I give Steve Jobs the last word: β€œIt's really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them.” Thanks for an interesting discussion Steve.

Hi @Kristen Edens, welcome to beBee and great story along with a great topic! My husband was let go from his job as director of IT for a hospital in 2001. He had been doing some side work for Dr's offices and a few small hospitals, so luckily he built a reputation. We still had no idea what the future was going to hold for us but one day he received a call from his former CEO who was on a board and asked him to send and RFP for a large job. He's been a sole proprietor and LLC since then. It's not easy when you are self-employed but I know he'd never go back and work for anyone again.

And for some instances doesn't workout statistically for exact words. apart from the demographical factor, browser as well as user set filters (or default) and ISP play a role in delivering search results. @Robert Bacal just like that (due to reasons) for self understanding and learning past many years tried cross-check.

Google has always shuffle results and only works statistically if you ask the exact wording" Now beBee is a tool where you connect with people that don't know who you are and certainly not what you are doing. I beleive in affinity networks aggregating fields of interests that bounds a seeker to a producer. Now google algorithm is worth being here, but not effective of a demographic related search standpoint.. The point is to be in the 1st in M2M linking that is far more effective than a google search. What is important, that the word spreads or that you alone find yourself in first rank in a google page..because google will take accountability the fact that you are read instead of found. Does that make sense ?
